Scouting director Mock quits

Julian Mock, a member of the Reds organization since 1968 and director of scouting since 1990, resigned on Monday. Mock is expected to take a higher-paying position with another club.

''Based on the conversations I'd had with him the past couple months, I'd seen it coming,'' Reds General Manager Jim Bowden said. ''Economically we could not meet his demands within our budget.'' Bowden said Mock's responsibilities didn't change, but last year the Reds hired Al Goldis as senior director of scouting and player development, a position higher than Mock's.

With Mock as director of scouting, Reds top picks included Pokey Reese, Brett Tomko and Chad Mottola.

''Obviously it's a setback,'' Bowden said. ''He's been a very good evaluator of talent for many years.''

Rule 5 draft

The Reds selected Cardinals pitching prospect Keith Glauber in Monday's Rule 5 draft.

Glauber, 25, went 5-7 with a 2.75 ERA at Double-A Arkansas and 1-3 with five saves at Triple-A Louisville last season. Glauber underwent surgery for a rotator cuff tear but is expected to be ready by spring training.

Glauber must stay with the Reds the entire 1998 season or be offered back to the Cardinals.
