Reds catcher Brook Fordyce arrived at Cinergy Field a little bleary-eyed but very happy.
His wife, Jacqueline, gave birth to a 6-pound, 12-ounce girl at 2:10 a.m. Saturday morning. The couple named the child, their first, Blake.
Jacqueline is in Jensen Beach, Fla., so Brook was in communication by phone.
''She called about 2:20,'' he said. ''We were on the phone all night.''
Fordyce guessed he got to sleep about 6:30 or 7 a.m.
He was at the stadium four hours later and found himself in the starting lineup.
''He did a heck of a job,'' manager Ray Knight said. ''I like the way he works with certain pitchers. He and (Mike) Morgan are in synch.''
Fordyce was 0-for-4, just missing a three-run homer in the second inning. Florida center fielder Devon White caught the ball against the wall at the 404 mark.
''Almost,'' Fordyce said. ''Maybe if I had gotten a little more sleep.''
Next stop Cinergy?
Scott Klingenbeck, the right-hander acquired last week from the Minnesota organization, was impressive in his debut at Indianapolis. He went six innings, allowing one run and only three hits.
Klingenbeck is a Oak Hills High graduate.
Boone's day
Bret Boone, who has been in a season-long slump, had his first two-hit game of the season. He singled in the second and doubled and scored in the fifth.
He entered the game with one hit in his last 22 at-bats. He was 0-for-2 with a walk Friday night.
''But I was starting to feel better,'' he said. ''I'm getting there. I'm close.''
Boone pulled the double into the left-field corner, but he was happier with the single to right-center.
''That's the key for me,'' he said, ''when I go with the pitch and hit the opposite way.''
Up, up and ERA
How bad was the Reds pitching coming into Saturday's game? This bad: It was the first time since divisional play began in 1969 that the team had allowed 10 runs or more in three straight games.
Up next
Dave Burba (1-1, 11.32 ERA) faces lefty Al Leiter (2-0, 4:09) in the finale of the third-game series at 2:15 p.m. today.
Burba was horrendous the last time out, but he is the only Reds starter to go seven innings this year. He did it April 2, allowing three runs in a 5-3 win over Colorado.
The Reds go to Atlanta for a three-game series after today.
