Who's in left?
That is the daily question in the Reds clubhouse these days. It was not Ruben Sierra for the third straight game Saturday.
Eduardo Perez started in left field Saturday. Friday, it was Ozzie Timmons. Wednesday in Colorado, it was Lenny Harris.
What gives?
''I'm going to put someone out there every day,'' Reds manager Ray Knight said with a smile. ''No, I just want to look at the choices.''
Sierra went 2-for-17 (.118) before the benching.
''I haven't given up on him,'' Knight said. ''I want to look at the other bats.''
Knight said he will start Sierra in left today and Perez, who was 1-for-3 Saturday, will play first base.
Knight wants to give Hal Morris a day off against Marlins left-hander Al Leiter.
''I know Hal won't like it,'' Knight said. ''But I want to play Eduardo two days in row.''
Morris is in a 2-for-24 slump that has dropped his average to .184.
While Knight says he hasn't given up on Sierra, he is not ruling out someone winning the left-field position from Sierra.
''He'll be back,'' Knight said, then added, ''unless someone else takes hold of the spot.''
It won't be Timmons: He was sent to Class AAA Indianapolis before Saturday's game to make room for Pokey Reese.
The Reds have been trying to trade for a left fielder, talking to the New York Yankees about Tim Raines and to San Diego about Rickey Henderson.
Sierra saw he wasn't in the lineup Saturday and shook his head.
''I don't know what's going on,'' Sierra said. ''I am not the manager here. I just let it go.''
