New shoe could get hurting Schilling back on the mound

Playoffs notebook

The Associated Press

Curt Schilling got a look at a new shoe Friday that he hopes could protect his injured right ankle.

Don Gibadlo, Reebok's director of promotional footwear, met with Schilling, who usually wears low-cut spikes. The new shoe is a high model with two inches of foam padding around the ankle. The mouth also was made wider to leave room for an ankle brace.

Schilling wore the new shoe when he threw in the bullpen at Fenway Park on Friday and it worked well, Red Sox manager Terry Francona said.

Schilling lasted only three innings and allowed six runs in New York's 10-7 win Tuesday in the opener of the best-of-seven series. The next day, the Red Sox announced he had a torn sheath around two tendons in his ankle that allowed one tendon to slip out of place, making it hard for him to push off the rubber and stay balanced.

Francona has said Schilling will not start Game 5, though that could change because Game 3 was postponed by rain and Game 5 was moved from Sunday to Monday.

YANKEES: Felix Heredia is the only left-hander on the postseason pitching staff - and he has appeared in just one game.

Some considered that a weakness in this series, because Boston has several dangerous left-handed hitters, including David Ortiz, Johnny Damon and Trot Nixon. But the Yankees aren't worried - they trust Tom Gordon and Mariano Rivera in the late innings.

Gordon held left-handed hitters to a .185 batting average and one homer during the regular season. Lefties hit .234 against Rivera.

"We get to a certain part of the game and we just eliminate the matchups as far as lefty-righty," manager Joe Torre said.

ASTROS: Craig Biggio gave a tearful remembrance and Houston teammates Jeff Bagwell and Brad Ausmus also were in attendance Friday at a memorial service for Ken Caminiti.

Astros owner Drayton McLane, general manager Gerry Hunsicker and manager Phil Garner were at the service at Second Baptist Church in Houston, as were San Diego owner John Moores and GM Kevin Towers.

Caminiti died last Sunday in New York at 41. Tests are being conducted to determine the cause of death for the 1996 NL MVP.

Caminiti spent most of his 15-year career with the Astros and Padres. He made his major-league debut with Houston in 1987.

"He took me under his wing when I got here," Bagwell said.

"Before I went to sleep last night, I was talking to my wife about our time together," the first baseman said. "I have nothing but great memories of Cammy - nothing bad. If you say negative things about him, you obviously didn't know him."

Bagwell and Ausmus were late to the Astros' afternoon workout at Minute Maid Park and Biggio was absent.

The Astros plan to honor Caminiti before Game 3 of the NL Championship Series today.

CARDINALS: The team probably has lost veteran left-hander Steve Kline for the rest of the NLCS because of problems with his index finger. He has a torn tendon, as well as gout.

Kline, who couldn't get any velocity on his pitches in Game 2, allowed two consecutive singles in the sixth inning before being taken out of the game. He didn't accompany the Cardinals to Houston after the game, instead seeing a hand specialist Friday in Indianapolis.

• Backup Roger Cedeno might get a chance to start in Game 3 of the NLCS, if manager Tony La Russa follows form.

Roger Clemens will pitch for Houston, and Cedeno has fine career numbers against the Astros ace - 10-for-23 (.435).
