Cruz leaves Reds as free agent

Utility player Jacob Cruz decided to become a free agent Thursday rather than stay with the Cincinnati Reds, who had dropped him from their 40-man roster.

Cruz was the Reds' top pinch-hitter this season, leading the team with 14 hits and 55 at-bats off the bench.

He also started 22 games in the outfield or at first base after he was promoted from Triple-A Louisville April 28.

Cruz hit .224 overall with three homers and 28 RBI.
