Casey unfazed by falling RBI shy of 100

By John Fay
Enquirer staff writer

It's just a number, but 100 RBI sounds a lot better than 99 RBI.

For the second time in his career, Sean Casey finished with 99 RBI.

"Stats are stats," the first baseman said. "You come out and play hard every day. Ninety-nine is still a lot of RBI. It's probably in the top 15. I think I had a good year."

Casey drove in No. 99 on Sept 24. In the nine games that followed, he came up with runners in scoring position five times. He went 0-for-4 with a walk.

"RBI is the one stat where you rely on other people," Casey said.

"I didn't get a lot of chances."

GOOD START TO END: Brandon Claussen went six innings, allowing one run on five hits, in the Reds' season-closing 2-0 loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates.

"It was a nice outing for him," Reds manager Dave Miley said. "It gives him something to build on. He knows what he has to do in the offseason."

Claussen, the 25-year-old left-hander, finished 2-8 with 6.14 ERA.

"I've got to work on command with all my pitches," he said. "With my breaking ball, I'll throw a good one. Then I'll overthrow the next one."

ATTENDANCE: The Reds drew 30,854 for Sunday's finale at Great American Ball Park. That put them at 2,2287,250 for the season.

That was down 68,009 from last season - a drop of 2.9 percent.
