AL: Angels thump A's, take West lead

The Associated Press

OAKLAND, Calif. - Bartolo Colon dominated in seven sharp innings while pitching on three days' rest for the third time in his career, and No. 9 hitter Alfredo Amezaga had a grand slam that put Anaheim one game away from the AL West title.

Pinch-hitter Andres Galarraga led off the ninth with his first homer and No. 399 of his career. The Angels got hits from nine players to win for the sixth time in seven games and take a one-game lead over Oakland with two to play.

The A's have reached the postseason the past four years, losing in the first round each time.

Colon (18-12) won for the fifth time in six starts, retiring 13 of his first 15 batters. Colon pitched three-hit ball through seven innings, striking out six and walking none.

Mark Mulder (17-8) has pitched so poorly the A's briefly considered skipping his turn and using September callup Joe Blanton instead. After the Angels' four-run second, Mulder was done and Blanton relieved.

The two innings matched Mulder's career low, set in 2000.

Twins 4, Indians 3

MINNEAPOLIS - Corey Koskie homered and hit a go-ahead two-run single in the eighth inning, lifting Minnesota over Cleveland.

The AL Central champion Twins can still begin the playoffs at home. If they beat the Indians on Saturday and Sunday, and Anaheim and Oakland avoid a sweep in their three-game series this weekend, Minnesota would host Boston in Game 1 of the division series on Tuesday. If not, the Twins would open at the New York Yankees.

Ronnie Belliard went 3-for-4 with a home run, and Coco Crisp was 2-for-3 with an RBI for Cleveland.

Minnesota won for just the third time in 10 games since clinching. Joe Nathan worked the ninth for his 44th save in 47 tries after Jesse Crain (3-0) pitched a scoreless eighth.

Bobby Howry (4-2) started the eighth, allowing singles to Lew Ford and Jason Kubel and a walk to Torii Hunter. Cliff Bartosh relieved and got one out before Koskie's big hit.

Koskie hit his team-leading 25th home run to spoil Scott Elarton's shutout bid with one out in the seventh. Cristian Guzman's RBI groundout made it 3-2.

Blue Jays 7, Yankees 0

TORONTO - David Bush pitched a two-hitter for the first complete game of his major league career, and Toronto beat Orlando Hernandez and New York.

Hernandez (8-2), pushed back three days in the rotation because of a tired shoulder, lost his second straight start, allowing five runs, five hits and three walks in three innings as he repeatedly threw soft pitches.

El Duque, who left after 63 pitches, is on track to pitch Game 3 of the playoffs next Friday.

A day after clinching their seventh straight AL East title, the Yankees started just one regular, Hideki Matsui. He has started every game this season, extending his streak of consecutive games played to 322. Before he joined New York, he played in 1,573 consecutive games for the Yomiuri Giants in Japan's Central League.

Bush (5-4), making his 16th major league start, struck out a career-high 11 and walked three, allowing singles to Enrique Wilson in the fifth and Dioner Navarro in the eighth.

Vernon Wells hit a two-run homer in the first inning for the Blue Jays.

Devil Rays 4, Tigers 1

DETROIT - For the first time in its history, Tampa Bay won't finish last - Rob Bell came within an out of his first career shutout before Ivan Rodriguez doubled for his 1,000th career RBI, and the Devil Rays beat Detroit to clinch fourth place in the AL East.

Tampa Bay, which began play in 1998, improved to 69-90 and cannot be overtaken by last-place Toronto.

Bell (8-8) pitched a four-hitter for his second complete game in 105 major league starts. The other was a six-hitter for Cincinnati in 2000.

Omar Infante reached with one out in the ninth on an error by third baseman B.J. Upton. After Bobby Higginson grounded out to first, Rodriguez doubled down the left-field line.

Mike Maroth (11-13) gave up four runs and seven hits in seven-plus innings, ending his hope to finish at .500 after a 21-loss season last year.

Red Sox 8, Orioles 3

BALTIMORE - Tim Wakefield allowed two runs in six innings for his first victory since August, and Johnny Damon and David Ortiz homered to power Boston past Baltimore.

Boston trailed 2-1 before rallying against the Baltimore bullpen for two runs in the seventh inning, and five in the ninth. The victory enabled the Red Sox to reach 96 wins for the first time since 1978.

Boston was eliminated from contention for the AL East title when the New York Yankees beat Minnesota on Thursday, but will enter the playoffs as a wild-card team.

Meanwhile, the Orioles (77-82) clinched a seventh straight losing season.

Wakefield (12-10) was 0-3 in five starts since Aug. 29.

Baltimore starter Rodrigo Lopez (14-9) gave up three runs on five hits in 6 2-3 innings.

The Red Sox trailed 2-1 when Orlando Cabrera drew a one-out walk and took third on a single by Bill Mueller. Lopez was then replaced by Jason Grimsley, who promptly yielded an RBI single to Doug Mirabelli. Two batters later, Mark Bellhorn singled in the go-ahead run.

White Sox 4, Royals 2

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Jon Garland pitched six solid innings, and Chicago clinched second place in the AL Central with a win over reeling Kansas City.

Garland (12-11) allowed two runs and five hits with three strikeouts and three walks to lead the White Sox to their eighth win in 11 games. He raised his career record against Kansas City to 10-4.

The White Sox improved to 82-78, three games ahead of third-place Cleveland with two to play.

The Royals have lost seven in a row and a franchise-record 103 for the year.

Jaime Cerda (1-4) relieved Denny Bautista to start the seventh and loaded the bases with one out on two walks and a single by Juan Uribe.

Reliever Matt Kinney came in and struck out Aaron Rowand, then threw a wild pitch that scored Joe Borchard with the go-ahead run.

After an intentional walk to Carlos Lee, Kinney walked Paul Konerko on a 3-2 pitch to force in the fourth run and give Konerko his 117th RBI and second of the game.

Shingo Takatsu got three outs for his 19th save in 20 chances.
