Joe Nuxhall chats with Cincinnati.Com

Reds broadcaster Joe Nuxhall joined Cincinnati.Com for a live chat today to discuss his years with the organization, his thoughts on this year's team and his memories of 60 years in baseball. Read the transcript below.

amy (11:57:58 a.m.)
Welcome to today's chat!

amy (11:58:35 a.m.)
Joe Nuxhall will begin answering your questions in just a moment. Please keep in mind that this is a moderated chat. Your questions will not show up in the chatroom until we have had a chance to view them and respond.

amy (11:59:38 a.m.)
This is your chance to ask Joe about his 60 years with the Reds, his opinion of the team, or any other questions you have.

rudy (12:00:46 p.m.)
Joe, what's your fondest memory of Red's baseball? I know it must be tough to pick just one.

Joe Nuxhall (12:00:46 p.m.)
i guess probably the 70s teams -- i didn't play, but those back to back championships were great. the 90s world series was great --nobody exppectedtus to compmpete and went wire o tirwre. as a playr, gosh, '56 we came close, '64, last day we got beat out. thoswe were fond memories. the year the reds tied themajor league reocord for hr in a seaon, 221, tht was tops for me.

biggy1 (12:01:46 p.m.)
Does Carl really care if he wins or not?

Joe Nuxhall (12:01:46 p.m.)
i think he cares. i hope he didn't buy it just to buy it. i believe he wants to win. some people question it because of finances. we can't spend a ton ofmoney. we are limited in what we can draw from.

sherman_mike (12:03:36 p.m.)
What baseball city, besides Cincy, have you developed the most liking for?

Joe Nuxhall (12:03:36 p.m.)
i've always liked chicago. years ago, you'ed get up, have breaksfast and go play ball, and have dinner at a normal time. my next is sand diego. i like it becuase of the weather. becuase of golf. i like st.louis because it reminded me of cincinnati. the people very frieiendly. good fans. chicago fans geta little carried away. st.louis fns respect guyswho play well.

amy (12:05:15 p.m.)

Guest (12:05:25 p.m.)
yo knuxie..what up...what do u think about the larkin situation??

Joe Nuxhall (12:05:25 p.m.)
it will be interesting to watch. i know barry would like to finish his career here. he's competitor. you want to play. but the ballclub is looking at the future. the only way is to play the guys they've been playing. it's nothing against barry. they ae trying to find some things. i have a confident feeling he's going to be here. unless he's adamant about moving on.i think he wants to finish here. nexst year would be his 20th --- that'ssome kind of accomplishmnent.

Guest (12:05:36 p.m.)
What kind of youth baseball leagues did you play in, if any?

amy (12:07:25 p.m.)
Do you have a favorite memory of Joe Nuxhall? Post it to the chatroom.

Joe Nuxhall (12:07:55 p.m.)
back when i was 8-9 years old. we had knothole leaue in hamilton. when i was 12, i played in muni leagaue with my dad. i was the fillin. first base. playing with the older guys. i'd play with them. i'd play with older guys in basketball, too. 10-15 years older. i think it helped. gaae me a little more drive.

Buckeye (12:09:52 p.m.)
Joe, I grew up listening to you on the radio. Thanks for a lot of great memories !

Dragon (12:12:03 p.m.)
I live in San Diego now, but as a kid growing up in Cincinnati in the 70's, it was always a treat to listen to Marty and Joe every day during the summer. I really miss that.

THNDRacket (12:12:08 p.m.)
What was it like going back to school after pitching in the big leagues at 15 years old?

Joe Nuxhall (12:12:08 p.m.)
it was a good experience. when i went back to school, a lot of the teams in ohio state league -- middotown, lima, springfieild -- were in our high school league. going back there and playing -- football at lima -- we beat lima south. we beat them 25-7. i played fullback. they questined my eligibility. it was a good thing for me. i was ineligible for allsports my soph and junior years. that really hurt. baaseall, football, basketball. so i tried to get it back. so i got it back my senior year.

Buckeye (12:13:55 p.m.)
Joe, I grew up listening to you on the radio. Thanks for a lot of great memories !

Joe Nuxhall (12:13:55 p.m.)
i wasn't educated along the lines of marty, and al, and claude sullivan. marty stands out for 31 years. al michales surprised me wiht his kknoledge of gme from the first broadcast. al grew up in ny, and he went to a llot of dodgers game. had a lot of good stories to tell.

redsfan01 (12:14:22 p.m.)
What's the best single season you've seen a Reds player have?

amy (12:16:32 p.m.)
If you can't watch the Reds final games of the 2004 season, you can follow the action online. Get lives scores and game highlights at Cincinnati.Com.

Guest (12:16:52 p.m.)
Hi Joe! Just wanted to say that I'm a huge fan of yours--have listened to you for years, and am really glad to hear you'll be around some next season, too!

Dragon (12:17:01 p.m.)

Joe Nuxhall (12:17:01 p.m.)
Baseball is good on radio. One of the things we appreciate about is is the shutins who can pass the time of day. We try to make yoiu feel like yu are in seat at the ballpark. WE try to be as exact as posible with everyt pitch. I have problem with left-right field, but tha's going on 38 years. I think putting people in a seat at the ballpark is what marty and i cherish the most.

Guest (12:17:28 p.m.)
glad to talk with you hope you have a happy life thanks for all your years. flamin

deb (12:18:36 p.m.)
At one time I thought about becoming a sportscaster. But this was back in the early 1970s and it was hard for a woman to break into sports reporting in general. I did a few games in college and was a sports reporter for a few years, but it took all the fun out of watching the game. Did you ever hit a point in your broadcast career where it was more work than fun?

Joe Nuxhall (12:18:36 p.m.)
I think in the 80s when we were really down, it became difficuolt. we hit rock bottom. we had to step it up a bit to keep the enthusiasm up. that's when we decided the gmae wasnt' the only going on. i think it made us baettter. we started bantering. e got into the tomato growing bit.

Sherman_mike (12:20:38 p.m.)
I was born in 1960 and the sound of Marty and Joe on the radio btrings back such fond memories. Sometimes I would listen to the west coast games as I drifted off to sleep. What do you hate most about today's game or associated issues?

Joe Nuxhall (12:20:38 p.m.)
i think being an old pitcher that there are a lot of guys, who if yoiu seen 10 hit by a pitch, 7 get hit by stepping into the ball. the pitchers are penalized big time. pitching inside is part of pitching. nowadays the pitcher is fined, and even suspended. as an expitcher, i stick kup for the pitchers. i don't condone throwing to hurt a hitter, but a pitchere isn't perfect. he pitches inside and a pitch gets away from him.

poncho (12:21:38 p.m.)
Joe, I truly hope that you and the Reds organization can work something out so you can do at least 35 games next year! Any update on the number of games you'll do in '05?

Joe Nuxhall (12:21:38 p.m.)
no update yet. i haven't talked to john allen yet. we are waiting on the final schedule. as soon as we get tht, we'll go over that. how many? i don't know. hopefully, there will be some.

Guest (12:23:44 p.m.)
First of all congratulations on an incredible career...not just in the booth but on the field as well. Your dedication to this franchise is amazing. Now i'm kind of an "old soul" when it comes to baseball. I'm only 40 but wish I could have been around to see baseball in the 30's, 40's and 50's when almost all my favorite players played. That being said can you give me an idea of the changes in the dugout from your days playing to todays teams... I occasionally see some pranks and such but it seems so much different from watching film from the past.

Joe Nuxhall (12:23:44 p.m.)
not being in the dugout now, i don't know. i think there is still some bench jockeying. yelling at an opposing player. we had don newcombe, rocky bridges was good. yelling at the umpires. newk was big with the umpires. "raise the shade!" he'd say. rocky would say to a bloop hitter: what you hit that with, the satyurday evening post?

poncho (12:26:32 p.m.)
Does is still hurt that you were not part of the Reds in '61?

Joe Nuxhall (12:26:32 p.m.)
Yes, it does. That being my only year away from the organization, they go to the world series! we enjoyed kansas city very much. wasn't a good ballclub -- we finished tenth -- but it was nice. that was charlie finley's first year owning the kc team. finley spent money back then. he'd take the whole teamout to dinner. one time we beat camilo pascual, and charlie took us to a steakouse n chicago. they said they close at 10. we ate great at and we didn't get there until about 11 oclock!

Guest (12:30:02 p.m.)
Joe....what do you do in your spare time....when you are not involved with baseball? Any other hobbies?

Joe Nuxhall (12:30:02 p.m.)
Golf primarily. Golf is big. I like getting out and playng with my buddies in hamilton 3 times a week. i play with marty and other guys on the road. i enjoy spoening timme at charitaale golf outings. I also like woroking with my foundation. one -- the scholarship foundation -- is we give $2,000 to each high school in butler county. and we have a charcter ed foundation, working with kids in elementary school. we doo that in fairfield, hamilton, and other places, too. it's a great program, good for the kids. i'm thrilled to be involved with all tht. we hope to make better kids out of it, by geting to them earlier. i also like to do yardwork! people say why you cut your own grass? because i enjoy it! and in wintertime, i put a snowblade on my djohn deere, and do about 9 driveways.!

Joe Nuxhall (12:30:52 p.m.)
I would say, i appreciate all you fans. the fans have always been supportive of our broadcast, and the things we try to do. hopeufl they will continue.

amy (12:31:26 p.m.)
We are out of time for today. Thank you all for joining us! I'm sorry that Joe wasn't able to get to all of your questions. Please see Sunday's Enquirer for more about Joe, his family and his legacy with the Cincinnati Reds.

mike (12:31:43 p.m.)
Don't ever retire Joe!

rosiered (12:32:31 p.m.)
Mr.Nuxhall, I am from Cincinnati orginally but now live in Missouri (Cardinal country) and am still and will always be a Reds fan! I just wanted to thank you for all the years (good and bad) that you have worked for the Reds! When I was a kid in the 70's I use to take my transistor radio to school with me a put in my desk to listen to games, as well as late at night when you and Marty were out in California I use to put that same radio under my pilliow and fell asleep listening to the both of you. I don't have any kids now but when I do I will tell them of all the excitement you gave me by listening to the games over the years! Thanks again for all you have done for the Reds community!

amy (12:33:06 p.m.)
I'd like to thank Enquirer writer John Erardi for typing for Joe today. Thanks, John!

amy (12:33:54 p.m.)
A transcript of today's chat will be available at Cincinnati.Com later this afternoon.
