Miley: No more off days for Dunn

Reds notebook

PITTSBURGH - Saturday was really Adam Dunn's last day off this season.

Reds manager Dave Miley said that the last time he was out of the lineup. That was Sept. 16.

But Miley changed his mind.

"(Hitting coach Chris Chambliss) and I talked about it in Atlanta," Miley said. "Cham said Dunn was dragging a bit. Tonight's good with the left-hander going."

The Pittsburgh Pirates were starting lefty Dave Williams Saturday night.

Miley said Dunn's absence from the lineup has nothing to do with him approaching the single-season strikeout record.

Dunn has struck out 183 times this season - six shy of Bobby Bonds' record set in 1970.

"A day off is good for anyone," Chambliss said. "You don't want him out too often, because we need his production."

Dunn is on the brink of some milestones besides the strikeout mark.

He needs two runs and four RBI to reach 100 in each category.

If he does, he'll become the first Red since Joe Morgan to have 100 RBI, 100 runs and 100 walks in the same season. Morgan did it 1976, his second MVP season.

CASEY'S BIG DAY: About 400 people showed up at the ceremony to retire Sean Casey's No. 22 jersey at Upper St. Clair High School.

"It was great, really nice," Casey said. "There were a lot of people there I hadn't seen since high school."

Reds teammates Juan Castro, Ryan Freel, Jason LaRue and John Riedling attended.

"I was touched by that," Casey said.

NEXT: The Reds play the Pirates in the final game of the series here today. Right-hander Jose Acevedo (5-11, 6.16 ERA) faces right-hander Josh Fogg (9-10, 4.86).
