Janszen says film has foibles

By John Erardi
Enquirer staff writer

Although ESPN's new movie, Hustle, is based on the Dowd Report, which documented Pete Rose's gambling habits and led to his ban from baseball, former Rose associate Paul Janszen says there are some things the movie doesn't get right.

Janszen, who produced evidence that proved Rose bet on baseball, says he was not consulted by ESPN during the movie but that he has seen a cut of the film.

ESPN says the movie is a dramatization based on facts. Here are some details in the movie with which Janszen takes issue.

• The movie shows Janszen at Riverfront Stadium, communicating via hand signal to Rose, who is in the dugout, the results of out-of-town game scores, because the stadium scoreboard is broken.

Janszen says he communicated with Rose via the thumbs-up, thumbs-down, or the so-so signal on a half-dozen occasions. But he says it was not to relay specific game scores, but to tell Rose how he was faring overall.

• In the movie, Janszen's meetings with Rose bookie Ron Peters have sinister overtones.

Janszen says he met with Peters just once or twice, and that nothing dark was involved. For the most part, Janszen says, Peters was just a voice on the phone.

• Janszen says the movie never captures how fun Rose was to be around.

"Until I lent him money, he was a lot of fun to be around," Janszen said. "He was like the class clown. It was as though he was still 18 years old."
