Maddux rings up 15th win of season

The Associated Press

PITTSBURGH - Greg Maddux reached 15 wins for a record 17th consecutive season. Getting to 200 innings made him just as happy.

"You always have your goals," Maddux said Thursday after leading the Chicago Cubs over the Pittsburgh Pirates 6-3. "One of them is always to win 20. but you always have a goal to pitch 200 innings. If you can go out there and get your 200 innings, you have to be doing something right."

Maddux raised his season total to 201 2/3 innings, reaching 200 for the 16th time in 17 years - he missed by two-thirds of an inning in 2002. Maddux also hit a two-run single in a four-run second inning for the Cubs.

Unless Maddux (15-10) pitched a combined 400 innings or more in 2004 and 2005, the Cubs have the right to void his $9 million salary in 2006.

"I think 200 innings for me personally means more than the wins," Maddux said, "because you can't control the wins and losses as much as you can control showing up every fifth day and getting your 200 innings.

Cardinals 4, Brewers 2

MILWAUKEE - St. Louis reached 100 wins for the first time since 1985 and the seventh time overall, and has 10 games remaining to surpass its club record of 106 wins, set in 1942.

Yadier Molina hit his first major-league home run, a two-out drive in the eighth off Matt Wise (1-2) that broke a 2-2 tie for the Cardinals. Hector Luna followed with a home run.

Mets 4, Expos 2

MONTREAL - Tom Glavine won for just the third time since mid-June, and Gerald Williams and Victor Diaz homered to lead New York.

Glavine (10-13) has 261 career victories, trailing only 300-game winners Roger Clemens and Maddux among active pitchers.

Rockies 7, D'backs 1

Rockies 2, D'backs 1 (10)

DENVER - Jeromy Burnitz drove in the winning run with a bloop single in the 10th inning to give Colorado a doubleheader sweep.

In the opener, Jeff Francis pitched six strong innings for Colorado.

Orioles 9, Red Sox 7

BOSTON - David Newhan caught David Ortiz's bid for three-run homer at the edge of the warning track for the final out, saving Baltimore's victory.

Boston dropped 4 1/2 games behind the New York Yankees in the American League East going into this weekend's Fenway Park showdown.

Rangers 5, Athletics 4

ARLINGTON, Texas - David Dellucci's double drove home two runs to give Texas a three-game sweep. The Rangers moved within two games of the AL West-leading Athletics with 10 to play.

Yanks 7, Devil Rays 3

NEW YORK - Derek Jeter hit a leadoff home run, Jon Lieber pitched into the eighth inning and New York clinched its 10th consecutive playoff berth.

Indians 9, Twins 7

CLEVELAND - Cliff Lee won for the second time since July 16 and rookie Grady Sizemore hit a two-run homer to lead Cleveland.
