Yankees batter Pedro, Boston

Roundup of Sunday's games

The Associated Press

NEW YORK - The New York Yankees battered Pedro Martinez, chasing Boston out of town with their second rout in a row.

Gary Sheffield, Derek Jeter and Jorge Posada homered off an ineffective Martinez, and Mike Mussina gave the resilient Yankees another excellent outing Sunday as New York opened a 4 1/2-game lead in the AL East with an 11-1 victory.

Alex Rodriguez also connected in the second consecutive offensive outburst by the Yankees, who outscored their longtime rivals 25-5 the past two days after a deflating loss Friday night, when star closer Mariano Rivera blew a ninth-inning lead.

Martinez (16-7) lasted only five-plus innings and allowed eight runs, matching a season worst.

Indians 8, Royals 3

CLEVELAND - One day after Cleveland manager Eric Wedge said his team was playing like it had run out of gas, Ben Broussard hit a three-run homer to help Kyle Denney earn his first major-league win.

Broussard's 14th homer capped a five-run third inning off Denny Bautista (0-3) as Kansas City failed to sweep a team for the 57th consecutive series - since taking three straight from Texas on Aug. 26-28, 2003.

White Sox 6, Tigers 1

CHICAGO - Paul Konerko and Carlos Lee homered, and Freddy Garcia pitched shutout ball into the eighth inning to lead the White Sox.

Garcia (12-11) easily handled the Tigers and appeared headed for his first shutout of the season, but loaded the bases with one out in the eighth before allowing Dmitri Young's sacrifice fly.

Garcia allowed one run and six hits, struck out eight and walked three in 7 1/3 innings.

Athletics 2, Mariners 1

SEATTLE - Eric Chavez and Erubiel Durazo each drove in runs, helping Oakland pull three games ahead of Anaheim in the AL West.

Seattle's Ichiro Suzuki was hitless in four at-bats and walked, holding his season hits total at 236.

Twins 5, Orioles 1

MINNEAPOLIS - Johan Santana won his 11th straight start with another dominant performance, striking out a career high 14 over eight shutout innings for Minnesota.

By winning his 12th straight decision, Santana (19-6) tied a Twins team record set by Scott Erickson in 1991 and matched by Brad Radke in 1997.

Rangers 1, Angels 0

ANAHEIM, Calif. - Rookie Chris Young (2-2) allowed five hits in six innings, Kevin Mench hit a run-scoring single and Texas shut out Anaheim for the second straight day.

Anaheim leads the major leagues in batting at .285, but has been blanked three times in five games - including a 2-0 loss Saturday.

Blue Jays 9, Devil Rays 7

TORONTO - Vernon Wells homered in Toronto's five-run third inning and Guillermo Quiroz had two RBI for Toronto, which moved two games behind fourth-place Tampa Bay in the AL East.

National League

Diamondbacks 3, Cardinals 2

ST. LOUIS - St. Louis lost to Arizona in a game notable mostly for Rick Ankiel's first outing at Busch Stadium since May 10, 2001. Ankiel, who has battled wildness and injury, pitched two hitless innings with one walk and four strikeouts - striking out the side in the fifth on 14 pitches.

Giants 4, Padres 2

SAN FRANCISCO - J.T. Snow drove in four runs from the cleanup spot, hitting a clutch tiebreaking double to lift San Francisco over San Diego.

Barry Bonds took most of the day off, appearing only to draw his major league-record 106th intentional walk as a pinch-hitter in the eighth.

Dodgers 7, Rockies 6

DENVER - Shawn Green homered on a two-out, 0-2 pitch off Shawn Chacon in the ninth inning Sunday, and Los Angeles beat Colorado by overcoming a five-run deficit for the second time in three games.

Phillies 7, Expos 2

PHILADELPHIA - Kevin Millwood pitched two innings in his return from the disabled list, and Philadelphia had 14 hits, including three each by Jimmy Rollins and Placido Polanco.

Marlins 3, Braves 0

MIAMI - Ismael Valdez pitched six solid innings, Jeff Conine drove in all three runs and Florida averted a series sweep and still holds slim hopes in the playoff race.

Conine broke up a scoreless duel in the sixth against Russ Ortiz (14-9) with a two-run homer, then singled home an unearned run in the eighth.

Pirates 1, Mets 0, 1st game

PITTSBURGH - Humberto Cota homered for the game's lone run, and Ryan Vogelsong allowed two hits in seven innings to snap Pittsburgh's five-game losing streak.

Pirates 6, Mets 1, 2nd game

PITTSBURGH - Jason Bay hit a two-run homer to set a team rookie record, and Dave Williams pitched six shutout innings.
