Tribe's Gerut needs surgery

The Associated Press

CLEVELAND - Indians outfielder Jody Gerut needs surgery to repair a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee and could miss the start of next season.

Gerut was hurt in Friday night's game against Kansas City running down Abraham Nunez's hit into the right-field corner.

"I knew right away that a knee is not supposed to bend sideways the way it did," Gerut said as he stood on crutches by his locker Saturday.

"I haven't looked at the replay and I probably never will," he said. "I know what happened."

SHORT HOPS: With the home run Saturday, Barry Bonds moved into a tie with Ted Williams for 11th place on the all-time RBI list with 1,839. He also took over seventh place on the career list for total bases from Carl Yastrzemski with 5,540.

• Angels DH Tim Salmon underwent surgery Saturday to replace cartilage in his left knee. Salmon, 36, will have surgery on his left shoulder this winter.

• St. Louis' Reggie Sanders stole his 20th and 21st bases Saturday, giving him four seasons with 20 homers and 20 steals.
