DETROIT - The Kansas City Royals scored a team-record 26 runs in the first game of their doubleheader against the Detroit Tigers on Thursday, winning 26-5, then went scoreless in a 8-0 loss in the second game.
Joe Randa went 6-for-7 and tied a major-league record by scoring six times in Game 1. He became the first AL player to have six hits and six runs in a nine-inning game.
The Royals' output in the first game tied for the fifth-most runs in a major-league game since 1900, scoring the most since Texas beat Baltimore 26-7 on April 19, 1996, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.
The Royals had 26 hits against five pitchers. Angel Berroa had a three-run homer and a career-high five RBI, and Alberto Castillo knocked in a career-best four runs.
Jeremy Bonderman (9-11) shut down the Royals in the nightcap, allowing six hits in eight innings with nine strikeouts. Darrell May (9-17) lost his fifth straight. Zack Greinke (8-9) beat Jason Johnson (8-13) in the opener.
Yankees 9, Devil Rays 1, 1st game
Yankees 10, Devil Rays 5, 2nd game
NEW YORK - Gary Sheffield and Tony Clark each drove in two runs during a seven-run second inning, and the New York Yankees completed a doubleheader sweep of the sinking Tampa Bay Devil Rays.
The Yankees won all four games in the rain-shortened series and have won five in a row overall. They extended their AL East lead over Boston by at least a half-game, the first time they've increased the margin at all since Aug. 3.
Mike Mussina threw eight sharp innings in a 9-1 victory in the opener, which started with just a few hundred fans in the stands. Yankee Stadium filled up a bit more for the nightcap, with the paid attendance announced as 41,230.
The teams played two games because Wednesday's doubleheader was rained out. The first game Wednesday was supposed to be a makeup of Monday's doubleheader that was changed to a single night game when the Devil Rays were unable to get to New York in time for Game 1 due to Hurricane Frances. It was still uncertain when or if the unplayed game would be made up.
White Sox 7, Rangers 3
ARLINGTON, Texas - Mark Buehrle pitched a three-hitter for his second complete game of the season, sending Texas to its ninth loss in 11 games.
Paul Konerko and Joe Crede homered for the White Sox, who have won six of seven. Texas dropped six games behind AL West-leading Oakland.
Buehrle struck out six and walked two in his 13th career complete game. He retired 15 of his final 16 batters.
Kevin Mench hit a solo homer for Texas in the second, his 21st of the season and second in two games.
