The Chicago Cubs and Florida Marlins will play two doubleheaders to make up the three-game series that was wiped out last weekend in Miami by Hurricane Frances.
One game has been rescheduled as part of a doubleheader Friday at Wrigley Field beginning at 2:20 p.m. EDT. The teams, who met in the NL championship series last year and are battling for the wild card, will also play a doubleheader at Pro Player Stadium Sept. 20, an off day for both teams. The rescheduling means the Cubs will play 23 games in 21 days and won't have a day off after this Thursday.
The defending World Series champion Marlins lose an important home game in the pennant race and now play three doubleheaders in a span of 11 days, including one with Montreal.
"It's difficult both ways. They have it difficult, too," Cubs manager Dusty Baker said.
The Cubs get an extra home game Friday. But they play at Cincinnati on Sept. 19, then fly to Florida for two games the following day, and go to Pittsburgh to start a series with the Pirates on Sept. 21.
"There is no perfect scenario for anyone," Cubs general manager Jim Hendry said.
YANKS WITHDRAW REQUEST: The New York Yankees withdrew Tuesday their request that a postponed game with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays be forfeited, and Major League Baseball announced the game would be made up as part of a doubleheader Wednesday.
On Monday, the Yankees asked the commissioner's office to award them a forfeit over the Tampa Bay after the Devil Rays failed to arrive in time Monday because of travel problems due to Hurricane Frances. Commissioner Bud Selig made it clear that he had no intention of awarding a forfeit.
"We appreciate the continuing accommodation of the New York Yankees and their fans and apologize to them for any inconvenience that the delays may have cause," Bob DuPuy, chief operating officer of the commissioner's office, said in a statement Tuesday. "As the commissioner made clear, it is critical that the outcome of the pennant races be determined on the field."
The Yankees were 2 1/2 games ahead of Boston in the AL East heading into Tuesday's games.
DuPuy added that any issues involving the Devil Rays' travel was a matter of review between the commissioner's office and the team only.
The teams were originally scheduled to play a doubleheader Monday starting at 1 p.m., but the start time was pushed back two hours on Sunday. Because of the delay in Tampa Bay's arrival, the commissioner's office told the teams to play one game at 7 p.m. and said it would decide later on when to reschedule the second game.
Wednesday's doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 4:05 p.m.
