Hurricane causing postponements

MLB Notebook

The Associated Press

MIAMI - The Florida Marlins postponed today's game against the Chicago Cubs as Hurricane Frances moved closer to the eastern coast of Florida.

The Marlins already had postponed Friday night's game against the Cubs. No makeup dates have been scheduled, and the Marlins were waiting until today to decide whether to delay the third game of the series Sunday.

Marlins spokesman Steve Copses assured fans the games will be made up in Miami. The Marlins and Cubs play a three-game series at Wrigley Field next weekend.

Both teams have an open date Monday, Sept. 20. Other than that, the games probably would be played after the season ends Oct. 3. The Marlins trail the Cubs by 2 1/2 games in the race for the NL wild card.

The Cubs remained in Chicago on Friday, awaiting word on the series.

DEVIL RAYS: Tampa Bay postponed games today and Sunday against the Detroit Tigers because of Hurricane Frances.

The teams played their scheduled game Friday night, and the postponed games will be made up as part of a doubleheader Sept. 30.

"We did the right thing," Devil Rays manager Lou Piniella said. "The state, it will be hit twice over a short period of time."

Tampa Bay is scheduled to play a doubleheader Monday at Yankee Stadium. The Devil Rays will remain in Florida for most of the weekend to be with their families.

"As far as the schedule against the Yankees, it's yet to be determined," Tampa Bay general manager Chuck LaMar said.

PHILLIES: Left fielder Pat Burrell was in the lineup and batting sixth against the New York Mets on Friday, less than six weeks after his season appeared over because of a wrist injury.

Burrell had delayed season-ending surgery on his left wrist. He got a second opinion on the injury and learned he could not cause further damage if he tried to play.
