AKRON, OhioAn appeals court has upheld a three-day jail sentence Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Milton Bradley was ordered to serve for driving away while being issued a speeding ticket.
The Ninth District Court of Appeals ruled Wednesday that the trial judge did not unfairly sentence Bradley after he pleaded guilty earlier this year to a charge of obstructing official business, a second-degree misdemeanor.
Bradley has 45 days to appeal the appeals court ruling to the Ohio Supreme Court.
ANGELS: The Big Cat is back in the big leagues.
The Anaheim Angels purchased the contract of 43-year-old Andres Galarraga from Triple-A Salt Lake of the Pacific Coast League Wednesday. They had signed him to a minor-league contract Aug. 4.
Galarraga was diagnosed with a recurrence of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma in November. He underwent surgery and had a stem-cell transplant.
"I feel very good, mentally and physically," he said Wednesday.
PHILLIES: Hall of Famer Mike Schmidt will not return to manage the Philadelphia Phillies' Single-A team in Clearwater, Fla.
"I feel it is best for me to withdraw from the development program," Schmidt said Wednesday. "The experience was wonderful and rewarding but for several reasons does not work for me and my family."
ROSTER MOVES: The Florida Marlins recalled right-hander Ben Howard and catcher Matt Treanor from Triple-A Albuquerque Wednesday.
The White Sox recalled lefty Arnie Munoz from Triple-A Charlotte and activated catcher Sandy Alomar Jr. from the 15-day disabled list.
The Oakland Athletics recalled infielder Esteban German before Wednesday night's game.
The Texas Rangers activated right-hander Jeff Nelson, lefty Erasmo Ramirez and infielder Herbert Perry from the 15-day disabled list. The club also purchased the contracts of catcher Ken Huckaby and infielder Andy Fox from Triple-A Oklahoma.
The Baltimore Orioles activated outfielder Larry Bigbie and first baseman-designated hitter David Segui from the disabled list. Baltimore also recalled catcher Geronimo Gil..
Tampa Bay outfielder Rocco Baldelli returned from the 15-day disabled list Wednesday night and was in the lineup as the designated hitter. Tampa Bay also called up outfielder Matt Diaz and reliever Chad Gaudin.
The Cleveland Indians activated infielder Lou Merloni from the disabled list. They also recalled catcher Josh Bard and left-hander Cliff Bartosh.
