NL: Lidle gets first win with Phillies

The Associated Press

PHILADELPHIA - Former Red Cory Lidle homered and threw a four-hitter for his second shutout of the season, Marlon Byrd hit a grand slam and had five RBI, and the Philadelphia Phillies extended the Milwaukee Brewers' losing streak to 11 with a 10-0 victory Sunday.

Lidle (8-12) was terrific in his first win with the Phillies, striking out a season-high nine, walking one and not allowing a runner past second base in his fourth career shutout.

The right-hander was 0-2 with a no-decision since he was acquired from Cincinnati on Aug. 9.

It was also Lidle's fourth complete game this season, tied for second in the National League with Arizona's Randy Johnson.

Dodgers 10, Mets 2

NEW YORK - Robin Ventura hit his 17th grand slam to lead Los Angeles.

The Dodgers, who maintained their five-game lead in the NL West, scored three unearned runs in the fourth inning to take a 4-1 lead against the league's worst-fielding team. Ventura, making only his 19th start of the season, broke the game open in the fifth against Kris Benson (10-11), scoring the 1,000th run of his career on the homer.

Padres 11, Expos 3

MONTREAL - David Wells won his seventh consecutive road decision and had an RBI single, leading San Diego.

Ryan Klesko and Khalil Greene each hit two-run homers for San Diego. Wells (9-7) allowed eight hits and three runs in seven innings, improving to 3-0 in his last four starts.

Astros 10, Cubs 3

CHICAGO - Lance Berkman homered and Carlos Hernandez earned his first major league win in almost two years, leading Houston over Chicago in the final meeting of their testy season series.

Houston star Carlos Beltran left with a bruised knee after he was hit by a pitch in the eighth. Berkman was plunked in the helmet later in the inning, and the benches emptied for the second time in the four-game series when new Astros reliever Dan Wheeler hit Derrek Lee in the back with a pitch in the ninth.

Wheeler and Houston manager Phil Garner were ejected. The game was delayed for about three minutes, but no punches were thrown.

Jeff Bagwell capped a big series with three hits for the Astros, who took three of four from Chicago to climb back into playoff contention.

Marlins 8, Rockies 4

MIAMI - A.J. Burnett struck out a team-record 14 in eight impressive innings, Miguel Cabrera homered during Florida's five-run second inning and the Marlins completed a three-game sweep of Colorado.

Cardinals 4, Pirates 0

PITTSBURGH - Albert Pujols hit his 40th home run and reached 100 RBI for the fourth consecutive season, and St. Louis completed a three-game sweep of the Pirates.

Pujols, who also hit his first triple of the season, became the fourth player to start his major league career with four straight seasons with at least 100 RBI.

He joined Hall of Famers Al Simmons, Joe DiMaggio and Ted Williams as the only players to accomplish the feat.

Giants 9, Braves 5

ATLANTA - Barry Bonds hit a pair of mammoth two-run homers - giving him 696 in his career - and went 4-for-5 with six RBIs.

The home runs that traveled an estimated total of 929 feet were the second and third longest in Turner Field history. Bonds added a two-run single in the sixth inning to help end Atlanta's season-best, six-game winning streak.

Bonds had a chance for his first five-hit game in the eighth, but rookie right-hander Roman Colon struck him out.

It was the fourth multihomer game of the season for Bonds and the 68th of his career, breaking a tie with Mark McGwire and placing him second only to Babe Ruth, who had 72. Bonds, who leads the NL in batting at .368, also singled in his first at-bat to go 3-for-3 against Russ Ortiz (13-7).

Ortiz hadn't lost in 12 starts.

Jason Christiansen (4-2) pitched the fifth inning for the win. Dustin Hermanson earned his seventh save.
