AL: Indians' losing streak stops at nine games

The Associated Press

CLEVELAND - Coco Crisp caused more commotion than a runaway squirrel, diving headfirst for a go-ahead bunt single in the eighth inning that sent Cleveland over the New York Yankees 4-3 Wednesday night, ending the Indians' losing streak at nine games.

The Indians rallied for two runs in the eighth, providing an entertaining end to the 30,605 fans who spent much of the evening cheering for a squirrel.

"It was the Rally Squirrel," Crisp said. "He was our secret weapon. They've got the Rally Monkey in Anaheim and we've got our guy."

The little brown critter ran onto the field in the third inning, and later darted between Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez and Derek Jeter before settling down in center field. Play was held up several times, including in the seventh inning with Jeter at the plate and a runner on second.

The Indians superimposed a team jersey over a photo of the squirrel on the giant television screen in center.

Cleveland trailed 3-2 when Tom Gordon (6-4) walked Ben Broussard and Casey Blake to start the eighth. Jody Gerut sacrificed both over and Ronnie Belliard's sacrifice fly tied it.

Crisp then laid down a drag bunt past Gordon, diving to barely beat second baseman Enrique Wilson's throw.

David Riske (7-2) went 1 1/3 perfect innings and Rafael Betancourt got three outs for just his third save in 10 chances.

Twins 8, Rangers 5

ARLINGTON, Texas - AL Central-leading Minnesota had 13 hits off Texas starter Ryan Drese (11-7), a career high against the right-hander and one shy of a Rangers record. He pitched just 3 2/3 innings, his shortest outing this season.

Luis Rivas had a double and triple off Drese, then homered against Carlos Almanzar leading off the eighth inning. Lew Ford went 3-for-5 with a triple off Drese.

Red Sox 11, Blue Jays 5

TORONTO - David Ortiz homered twice and drove in four runs for Boston, and Curt Schilling (16-6) joined Oakland's Mark Mulder (17-4) as the only AL pitchers with at least 16 wins.

Schilling allowed one run and seven hits in 6 1/3 innings and struck out nine. His last strikeout was the 2,700th of his career, making him the 18th player to reach that mark.

Tigers 5, White Sox 4

DETROIT - Marcus Thames drove in three runs, and Nate Robertson pitched eight strong innings as Detroit extended Chicago's slump.

Carlos Guillen added three hits, including a homer, for the Tigers, who have won six of their last nine games.

Aaron Rowand hit a three-run homer off Ugueth Urbina in the ninth, but the White Sox lost for the sixth time in seven games. They have been outscored 46-21 in those losses.
