CHICAGO - Corey Patterson delivered after a disputed call went the Cubs' way, and Chicago sent the Milwaukee Brewers out of Wrigley Field with their eighth straight loss.
Patterson hit a two-out, two-run homer in the ninth inning Wednesday in a 4-2 victory, capping a rally that began on a controversial leadoff double by Mark Grudzielanek.
Patterson connected on a 2-2 pitch off Luis Vizcaino (4-4) as the Cubs won for the eighth time in 11 games and maintained their lead in the National League wild-card race.
Grudzielanek opened the ninth with a fly ball down the right-field line near the wall and took third when Brady Clark's relay went past second for an error. First base umpire Mark Wegner ruled it fair, and replays were inconclusive.
"He said it was right on the line. I don't know what line he was looking at," said Yost, who was ejected by Wegner.
"I saw what I saw. I saw it foul," Clark said.
Wegner disagreed, during the game and after.
"I just watched the replay and it showed it fair, too. It hit the line," Wegner said. "He (Yost) thought his player thought it was foul, but that's why I'm on the line, and I got a good look at it, so fair ball."
Giants 6, Marlins 5, 10 innings
MIAMI - Rudy Seanez intentionally walked Barry Bonds to load the bases in the 10th inning, then walked pinch hitter A.J. Pierzynski on four pitches to force in the tiebreaking run for San Francisco.
Pedro Feliz hit a two-run homer off Guillermo Mota to tie it at 5 for the Giants in the eighth inning.
Padres 4, Mets 0
NEW YORK - San Diego's Brian Lawrence (13-10) escaped a bases-loaded jam in the first inning and pitched a six-hitter for his second straight complete game.
Expos 6, Dodgers 3
MONTREAL - Brian Schneider hit a three-run homer and Montreal connected a total of four times off Jose Lima in giving manager Frank Robinson his 900th career victory.
Lima (11-4) lost for the first time in 11 starts since June 25.
Braves 8, Rockies 1
ATLANTA - Chipper Jones homered twice for Atlanta and matched his career high with five RBI. He is batting .346 (28-for-81) in August, with 10 homers and 25 RBI.
Eli Marrero also homered off Jeff Francis, who gave up six hits in his major-league debut, three of them homers.
Astros 7, Phillies 4
HOUSTON - Jeff Kent hit a tiebreaking three-run homer in the eighth inning, and Houston swept the season series from Philadelphia for the first time. The Astros' only other season sweep was against Montreal in 2001.
Pirates 2, Diamondbacks 1
PITTSBURGH - Jack Wilson and Jason Bay hit consecutive home runs off Randy Johnson in the seventh inning for Pittsburgh.
Johnson (12-12) made just 82 pitches in a three-hitter for his fourth complete game of the season, walking none and striking out 11. It was his 10th double-digit strikeout game this year and the 201st of his career, moving him 14 from Nolan Ryan's major-league record. Johnson needs 38 strikeouts to tie Steve Carlton for fourth on the career list.
