NL: Mets grab win on Giant error

The Associated Press

SAN FRANCISCO - Dustan Mohr allowed two runs to score when he dropped a fly ball in the 12th inning, and the New York Mets overcame a shaky return by Tom Glavine and a team-record six double plays to beat the San Francisco Giants 11-9 Saturday.

The game featured 10 double plays, 16 walks and three errors. But the biggest mistake was made by Mohr.

Just when it looked as if Giants reliever Kevin Correia (0-1) were going to pitch his way out of a bases-loaded, none-out jam with help from a sharp double play by first baseman Pedro Feliz and catcher Yorvit Torrealba, Mohr's gaffe gave New York the win.

Dodgers 7, Braves 4

LOS ANGELES - Shawn Green hit a grand slam and a solo homer for Los Angeles, which snapped Mike Hampton's string of seven straight wins. Jeff Weaver (11-10) won his fourth consecutive decision in a span of five starts, allowing three runs and eight hits in seven innings. With two outs in the first, he hit three consecutive batters with pitches - tying a major-league record. But he escaped that jam and another bases-loaded situation in the fifth.

Astros 4, Cubs 3

HOUSTON - Jose Vizcaino and Jason Lane hit RBI singles in the bottom of the ninth inning, and Houston won for the fifth time in six games by rallying past Chicago.

Michael Barrett hit a tying triple off winner Brad Lidge (4-6) in the top of the ninth and scored on Ramon Martinez's sacrifice fly, giving the Cubs a 3-2 lead.

Houston's Brandon Backe outpitched Mark Prior in his first major league start, throwing seven scoreless innings. Backe also hit a two-run single for his first career hit.

LaTroy Hawkins (2-4) took the loss.

Phillies 8, Brewers 6

MILWAUKEE - Chase Utley's bases-loaded triple keyed a six-run eighth inning, and Philadelphia rallied from a five-run deficit to beat Milwaukee.

Geoff Geary (1-0) struck out two in a scoreless seventh to earn his first major league win. Tim Worrell pitched the ninth for his 15th save in 21 chances as Philadelphia won for the second straight night following a seven-game losing streak at home.

Cardinals 10, Pirates 6

ST. LOUIS - Scott Rolen, Albert Pujols and Mike Matheny homered to lead St. Louis. Jeff Suppan (12-6) gave up five runs - three earned - and four hits in six innings as the Cardinals (81-42) moved to a season-high 39 games above .500 with their third straight win. St. Louis has won 14 of its last 18, and clinched its eighth straight series win.

Rockies 5, Expos 2

DENVER - Todd Helton homered and Joe Kennedy won for the first time since June 20 as Colorado ended a three-game skid with a victory over Montreal. Matt Holliday hit a two-run double and Vinny Castilla had a run-scoring double for the Rockies.

Helton finished 3-for-3 with three runs. Pitching after he appealed a five-game suspension for his part in a brawl with Pittsburgh catcher Jason Kendall on Aug. 15, Kennedy (6-5) allowed one run and five hits in 6 1/3 innings. Livan Hernandez (9-11) threw a complete game.
