NL: Astros hang on to beat Phillies

The Associated Press

PHILADELPHIA - Carlos Beltran's two-run double in the eighth inning helped Houston beat the Philadelphia Phillies 9-8 Wednesday night after Roger Clemens joined Andy Pettitte on the Astros' injury list.

Clemens is day-to-day after straining his right calf running to first base on his two-run single in the fourth. The six-time AL Cy Young Award winner gave up four runs in three innings.

Beltran finished with two hits and three RBIs for Houston, desperately trying to stay in the NL wild-card race. Brad Lidge retired pinch-hitter Chase Utley on a shallow fly with the bases loaded to end the game.

Marlon Byrd and Placido Polanco homered for the free-falling Phillies, who fell to 1-8 on their homestand.

Chad Harville (1-2) got the final two outs in the seventh. Dan Miceli pitched a scoreless eighth, and Lidge finished for his 14th save in 16 chances.

After the Phillies took an 8-7 lead in the seventh, the Astros rallied against Todd Jones (8-4).

Morgan Ensberg led off the inning with a single. He went to third when Jones threw wildly to second for an error on Jose Vizcaino's sacrifice bunt.

Felix Rodriguez came in and struck out pinch-hitter Mike Lamb before walking Jason Lane to load the bases. Rheal Cormier entered and struck out pinch-hitter Orlando Palmeiro, but Beltran lined a shot off the wall in left-center field, scoring two runs.

After the Phillies took a three-run lead in the third, Cory Lidle gave it right back. Jeff Kent and Vizcaino had RBI singles to cut it to 4-3. Clemens, a career .197 hitter, then put the Astros ahead 5-4 when he lined a 3-1 pitch to right field, scoring Ensberg and Vizcaino, and chasing Lidle.

Expos 6, Giants 2 (1st game)

Giants 14, Expos 4 (2nd game)

SAN FRANCISCO - Barry Bonds homered for the third time in two days to help lead San Francisco over Montreal in the second game of a doubleheader after losing the opener Wednesday.

Bonds connected for a solo shot off Francis Beltran in the fifth inning of the nightcap for his 34th homer and No. 692 of his career. The 40-year-old slugger left afterward to rest and Dustan Mohr replaced him in left field.

Mohr, batting in Bonds' spot, homered into the left-field bleachers with two outs in the seventh. The two-run shot was estimated at 451 feet and gave him seven homers.

Beltran became the 409th pitcher to give up a homer to Bonds, who drew two intentional walks before sending the first pitch he saw over the wall in right. The six-time NL MVP has 174 walks this year, 92 intentional.

Wayne Franklin (2-0) gave the Giants an impressive spot start, pitching six strong innings and getting his first career two-RBI game.

Mets-Rockies

DENVER - Heavy rains washed out Wednesday night's game between the New York Mets and the Colorado Rockies before it ever started.

The game will be made up as part of a doubleheader today.

Wednesday's scheduled starters - New York's Kris Benson and Colorado's Shawn Estes - will start the first game today. Colorado's Jeff Fassero will face Al Leiter in the nightcap.
