Pettitte's homecoming ends early

The Associated Press

PHILADELPHIA - Andy Pettitte's lost season came to an end Wednesday when the Houston announced the pitcher would have surgery on his troublesome left elbow next week.

"It was getting to the point where the guys were focused on whether I could make it through the inning, much less get through the year," Pettitte said.

Pettitte was put on the 15-day disabled list for the third time this season. Dr. James Andrews will do the surgery next Tuesday to repair a torn flexor tendon.

Pettitte was 6-4 with a 3.90 ERA in 15 starts for the Astro.

YANKEES: Gary Sheffield will not need surgery on his ailing left shoulder, but said he'll likely get two more cortisone shots to help alleviate the pain.

Sheffield sent his medical reports to orthopedist Dr. Frank Jobe a few weeks ago. On Wednesday, Jobe told Sheffield that his trapezius muscle is slightly separating from the bone.

Sheffield said he'll play through the pain for the rest of the season and then rest the shoulder. Sheffield said Jobe told him the injury shouldn't get worse if he plays.

WHITE SOX: Manager Ozzie Guillen was back at the ballpark Wednesday after spending one night in a hospital because of a kidney stone.

Guillen passed the kidney stone during his team's 11-8 loss to Detroit and was released from the hospital Wednesday morning.

MARINERS: Ichiro Suzuki was hit in the head by a pitch, forcing him out of Wednesday's game against Kansas City.

Suzuki, who leads the major leagues with a .366 batting average, was hit on the right side of his helmet by a 1-2 pitch from rookie Jimmy Serrano in the third inning. Suzuki stayed face down in the batter's box for several minutes before walking off the field.
