NL: Cardinals win with just 2 hits

The Associated Press

MIAMI - Two hits were all the St. Louis Cardinals needed to beat the Florida Marlins.

Albert Pujols ended Josh Beckett's no-hit bid with a home run in the sixth inning Tuesday night, and Jim Edmonds homered on the first pitch in the 10th inning to help St. Louis earn its sixth consecutive victory, 2-1.

The homers were the only hits for the Cardinals, who won for the 19th time in 24 games since the All-Star break.

The Marlins had seven hits but were shut out after Alex Gonzalez doubled home a run in the second.

St. Louis closer Jason Isringhausen pitched a perfect 10th for his 30th save in 35 chances.

Cardinals right-hander Chris Carpenter pitched just 2 1/3 innings before departing because of tightness in his lower back. Carpenter threw 55 pitches and left trailing 1-0.

Mets 7, Astros 3

NEW YORK - Rookie David Wright singled home the go-ahead run for New York and hit his first Shea Stadium homer. Richard Hidalgo delivered a key double, and Jose Reyes hit a two-run triple for the Mets. Lance Berkman hit his 18th home run.

Rockies 5, Phillies 4

PHILADELPHIA - Pinch-hitter Vinny Castilla delivered a go-ahead, two-run double in the ninth inning, and Jeromy Burnitz hit his 31st homer for Colorado. Steve Reed (3-2) allowed one run in one inning.

Pirates 8, Giants 7

PITTSBURGH - Barry Bonds set a major league record by reaching 30 home runs for the 13th straight season, but Rob Mackowiak's RBI double with two outs in the ninth inning gave Pittsburgh the edge over San Francisco.

Bonds' homer off reliever John Grabow in the seventh tied the score at 4 and made Bonds just the second player to hit 30 homers 14 times. Only Hank Aaron (15) has more. Bonds also became the seventh player in major league history to reach base 5,000 times when he walked in the first inning.

Padres 8, Cubs 6

CHICAGO - Ramon Hernandez had three hits, including a three-run homer, and San Diego took advantage of a wild Mark Prior to beat Chicago.

Adam Eaton (7-10) gave up four solo homers in five-plus innings but got the victory for the Padres. Sammy Sosa, Moises Alou, Derrek Lee and Nomar Garciaparra all hit homers for the Cubs. Sosa's shot was his 564th, moving him past Reggie Jackson into eighth place on the career list.

Expos 4, Diamondbacks 0

MONTREAL - Livan Hernandez and Luis Ayala combined on Montreal's ninth shutout, handing the Diamondbacks' their fifth straight loss. Hernandez (9-10) struck out eight in eight innings, allowing seven hits and two walks. Ayala pitched a one-hit ninth.

Brewers 3, Braves 2 (10)

ATLANTA - Chris Magruder homered leading off the 10th inning to send Milwaukee to a victory. The Brewers rallied from two runs down to snap the Braves' five-game winning streak. It was only their third loss in the past 17 games.
