PHILADELPHIA - Phillies slugger Pat Burrell will have season-ending surgery on his wrist Friday, another blow to Philadelphia's playoff hopes.

Burrell, who injured himself in batting practice last Tuesday, was hitting .263 with 18 homers and 68 RBI. He'll be replaced in left field by a combination of Doug Glanville, Jason Michaels and Lou Collier.

"It's terrible," Burrell said Monday. "The timing is awful because we are playing good at this time. The guys are starting to come together in the last six days and things have been going pretty good. To not be a part of it is tough, but you have to deal with it, take care of the problem and hopefully be ready for spring training."

The injury-plagued Phillies trailed the NL East-leading Atlanta Braves by 5 1/2 games going into Monday night's game against Colorado and were in the middle of the wild-card race.

Philadelphia also is minus closer Billy Wagner, starter Kevin Millwood and top setup reliever Ryan Madson. Third baseman David Bell is day-to-day with back spasms, and right-hander Vicente Padilla is due to return from the disabled list today.

"I've never seen a season with this many injuries to key players," Phillies manager Larry Bowa said.

YANKEES: Jason Giambi is slowly regaining strength, and New York Yankees manager Joe Torre thinks the former AL MVP will report this week to the team's spring training complex in Tampa, Fla.

The first baseman, who has felt weak for most of the season, has not played since July 23. The Yankees at first diagnosed him with an intestinal parasite, then said July 30 that he had a benign tumor, without disclosing where it was located.

SHORT HOPS: Tigers outfielder Alex Sanchez was placed on the 15-day disabled list Monday with a strained right thigh. In 79 games this season, he is hitting .322 with 19 stolen bases.

• The Oakland Athletics placed right-handed reliever Chad Bradford on the 15-day disabled list with a strained back. The A's filled Bradford's roster spot with 21-year-old right-hander Jairo Garcia from Triple-A Sacramento.
