A day after broadcaster Joe Nuxhall said the team was forcing him into retirement, the Reds tried to quell public uproar Thursday by announcing that Nuxhall has a future with the club, including "broadcasting some spring-training and regular-season games in the future."

In a four-paragraph statement, the team did not directly address Nuxhall's assertion of being forced out, made Wednesday during a reception to promote his new book, Joe: Rounding Third and Heading for Home.
The statement said there was "mutual understanding" reached in 2002 that this season was to be Nuxhall's final year in the broadcast booth.
But that is no longer the case. It appears Nuxhall will get what he wanted: a chance to call 15 to 20 games in 2005.
The Reds did not comment beyond the statement Thursday. Nuxhall, 76, was out of town and could not be reached. His lawyer Reuven Katz had no comment.
