NL: Braves opening daylight in East

The Associated Press

PITTSBURGH - Jaret Wright and four Atlanta relievers shut down the Pirates in what might have been Kris Benson's last start for Pittsburgh, a 4-2 Braves victory Monday night keyed by two hits from Johnny Estrada.

J.D. Drew ran his hitting streak to 22 games with a single in Atlanta's go-ahead fourth inning against Benson (8-8), who is expected to be dealt by Saturday's deadline for trading without waivers.

Benson was 4-1 in his previous seven starts and 3-0 in his last five.

In a matchup of two streaking teams, the Braves won their fourth in a row, their 21st in 28 games overall and their 10th in 11 road games. The Pirates had won three straight and 20 of 26, plus 14 of 15 home games.

The Braves improved to a season-high eight games over .500 (53-45) while beating Pittsburgh for the ninth time in 12 games the last two seasons. Atlanta moved 1 1/2 games ahead of second-place Philadelphia in the NL East.

Wright (8-5) lasted only five innings on a drizzly, muggy night, but still checked Pittsburgh on two runs and five hits, including Jack Wilson's solo home run.

Marlins 11, Phillies 3

MIAMI - Jeff Conine sparked a struggling offense with a three-run double, A.J. Burnett survived five rocky innings and Florida extended its mastery over Philadelphia.

The Phillies have lost 11 consecutive games in Miami, including four this year. They're 1-8 against the Marlins this season and 16-31 over the past three years.

The latest loss was especially frustrating, because the Phillies had 12 hits and were robbed of two more by shortstop Alex Gonzalez. They stranded 14 runners.

Expos 19, Mets 10

MONTREAL - Tony Batista had four hits and a career high six RBI to help Montreal extend its season-high winning streak to five.

Jose Vidro hit a three-run homer to spark a seven-run outburst in the third. Brad Wilkerson had three hits, including two in Montreal's second-biggest inning of the season, and Orlando Cabrera doubled twice and had three RBI for Montreal, which also scored four in the fourth to build a 12-4 lead.

The Expos, who also won four straight from May 14-18, hadn't won five in a row since Aug. 24-28.

Diamondbacks 4, Astros 1

HOUSTON - Arizona snapped its club-record 14-game losing streak behind Brandon Webb's pitching and Scott Hairston's hitting.

Astros starter Andy Pettitte came out after the fifth inning because of his troublesome left elbow, which has sent him to the disabled list twice this season. Pettitte (6-4) gave up three hits, including consecutive homers to Hairston and Luis Gonzalez in the first inning. The left-hander struck out four and walked none before leaving with a sore left elbow.

Cubs 3, Brewers 1

MILWAUKEE - Matt Clement won for the first time since June 8, and Mark Grudzielanek had three hits and two RBI in the Cubs' win. The Brewers, who have lost nine of 12 since the All-Star Break, were 0-for-10 with runners in scoring position. In their last seven games, six of them losses, they have just three hits in 55 at-bats with runners on second or third.
