PEABODY, Mass. - Florida Marlins draft pick Jeff Allison spent three days in the hospital because of a heroin overdose, according to police.

Allison was hospitalized after he and a friend split a bag of heroin July 17, Lynn police Lt. John Scannell said.

The friend, Jimmy Leontakianakos, told police that he passed out in a car and when he woke up, he noticed that Allison was having trouble breathing. He said he drove Allison to the hospital.

Allison was the Marlins' top pick in the June draft - 16th overall. He went 8-0 at Peabody High School and didn't allow an earned run in 63 1/3 innings during his senior season. He signed for a $1.85 million bonus.

BLUE JAYS: Toronto purchased the contract of right-hander Sean Douglass and recalled right-hander Micheal Nakamura from Triple-A Syracuse on Sunday.

Douglass will start tonight's game against the New York Yankees. He replaces former Cy Young Award winner Pat Hentgen, who retired on Saturday. Douglass went 5-6 with a 4.75 ERA in 18 games at Syracuse.

CARDINALS: Seldom-used outfielder Ray Lankford went on the 15-day disabled list with a sprained right wrist. Lankford's injury allowed the team to bolster its bullpen, recalling right-hander Dan Haren from Triple-A Memphis.

METS: New York placed right-handed relief pitcher Orber Moreno on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right shoulder and recalled right-handed pitcher Tyler Yates from Triple-A Norfolk.

Moreno, 3-1 with a 3.38 ERA, was injured while taking batting practice Saturday.

SHORT HOPS: Royals third baseman Joe Randa returned to the lineup, nearly two months after he had arthroscopic surgery on his right knee. Randa batted .282 with two homers before the operation.

• Red Sox catcher Jason Varitek was out of the lineup with a sore right wrist Sunday, one day after he pushed New York Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez in the face and touched off a bench-clearing brawl.

Varitek said he didn't know how he injured himself, but it was likely that it was during the fight.
