ST. LOUIS - Barry Bonds got to celebrate on his 40th birthday, even if the St. Louis Cardinals wouldn't allow him to contribute.
A day after Bonds hit a three-run, seventh-inning home run in the Giants' victory over St. Louis, he drew his major league-leading 79th intentional walk at a key spot in San Francisco's 5-3, 10-inning win.
Bonds declined to discuss any thoughts, saying "not today" when asked after the game if he was willing to talk.
"A game on his birthday is like any other game for him," Giants manager Felipe Alou said. "The other team is so busy worrying about him, thinking about when will he bat next and what will the situation be. He's a factor no matter what day it is."
Chris Carpenter, left in to pitch against the left-handed-hitting J.T. Snow following the walk to Bonds, got an inning-ending strikeout in the eighth that preserved a tie.
But the Giants went ahead for good in the 10th on Edgardo Alfonzo's two-run homer off Ray King (3-1) and sent the Cardinals to their first extra-inning loss in seven games this season. Alfonzo twice failed to get a bunt down earlier in the count, and he ended up with his seventh homer.
If Alfonzo had been successful in his sacrifice attempt, Cardinals manager Tony La Russa said Bonds would have seen his second intentional walk. Alfonzo did not play Friday because of food poisoning.
Phillies 4, Cubs 3
PHILADELPHIA - Paul Abbott earned his first win with Philadelphia and drove in the first two runs of his career.
Abbott, signed June 9 after Tampa Bay released him, allowed three runs and seven hits in 5 1/3 innings for his first win since April 21. He lost his first four decisions with the Phillies and hadn't won since April 21.
Expos 6, Marlins 2
MONTREAL - Endy Chavez hit a tying two-run triple in the sixth, then scored the go-ahead run on Jamey Carroll's sacrifice fly to lead Montreal.
Rocky Biddle (2-4) allowed two runs and six hits in six innings, his longest outing in three starts since joining the rotation.
Braves 5, Mets 2
NEW YORK - Julio Franco's game-tying double keyed Atlanta's four-run rally in the eighth inning against a struggling New York bullpen to lead the Braves over the Mets.
It was the Mets' eighth loss in 11 games and the fourth consecutive loss in which the bullpen has been charged with the loss.
John Thomson (8-7) gave up two runs in seven innings, Chris Reitsma pitched the eighth and John Smoltz worked the ninth for his 19th save.
Astros 6, Brewers 3
HOUSTON - Tim Redding pitched three-hit ball over five innings in his return to Houston's starting rotation, and the Astros beat Milwaukee.
Adam Everett and pinch hitter Jason Lane homered for the Astros.
Redding (4-6) was demoted to the bullpen after his start against Texas on June 26. He made four relief appearances before making his 15th start of the season and struck out six and walked three.
