AL: Hard-hitting Tigers put hurting on Yanks

The Associated Press

NEW YORK - Jason Johnson pitched eight dominant innings, and Rondell White and Bobby Higginson hit two-run homers to help the Detroit Tigers beat the New York Yankees 9-1 Tuesday night, ending their five-game losing streak.

Dmitri Young had three doubles and two runs, Carlos Guillen had a two-run single, and White added an RBI single against his former team as the Tigers rebounded from a 10-3 loss to New York on Monday with their first win at Yankee Stadium since Sept. 7, 2002.

A night after Esteban Yan was ejected for throwing over the head of Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez, All-Star catcher Ivan Rodriguez was hit in the elbow by reliever Tanyon Sturtze with two outs in the ninth inning. In the bottom half, Tigers closer Ugueth Urbina threw behind Gary Sheffield, and both benches were warned.

New York lost for the fourth time in five games.

Red Sox 11, Athletics 0

BOSTON - Tim Wakefield (5-5) pitched seven innings of three-hit ball for his first win in six weeks, and Johnny Damon singled five times to help Boston rebound after a 1-5 road trip.

Oakland's Barry Zito (4-6) allowed seven runs - six earned - on nine hits and three walks in four innings, walking in two runs in the fourth. He is winless in five starts.

Twins 4, Royals 0

MINNEAPOLIS - Johan Santana pitched a three-hitter for his first career complete game and tied his high with 13 strikeouts for Minnesota.

Torii Hunter homered for the Twins, who sent the Royals to a season-high seventh straight defeat.

Indians 4, Rangers 1

CLEVELAND - Cliff Lee (8-1) had few problems handling Texas as Cleveland stopped a three-game losing streak. The Rangers, who have scored 456 runs, didn't get a runner past second until the seventh inning, when Mark Teixeira homered.

Devil Rays 3, Orioles 1

BALTIMORE - Mark Hendrickson (6-6) pitched eight shutout innings, and Tampa Bay halted its losing streak at three games. Rocco Baldelli had four hits and an RBI for the Devil Rays, who ended their longest skid since a five-game drought in mid-May.

Blue Jays 7, Mariners 6

TORONTO - Carlos Delgado doubled in his first at-bat off the disabled list, and Reed Johnson and Josh Phelps homered in Toronto's six-run first inning.

Delgado, who missed 33 games because of a strained ribcage, went 1-for-3. Toronto went 13-20 while he was sidelined.
