NL: Gonzalez snaps Pirates' streak

The Associated Press

MIAMI - The Pittsburgh Pirates' 10-game winning streak ended, with Alex Gonzalez hitting a tiebreaking, three-run homer in the seventh inning Tuesday night that led the Florida Marlins to a 6-3 victory.

Pittsburgh's winning streak was its longest since it won 11 in a row from Sept. 12-22, 1996.

NL Rookie of the Year Dontrelle Willis remained winless in four starts since June 13 despite allowing just one run and five hits in six innings.

He left with a 2-1 lead, but Jack Wilson hit a sacrifice fly in the seventh off Josias Manzanillo and pinch-hitter Rob Mackowiak had an RBI single of the first pitch after Matt Perisho relieved with two outs.

Trailing 3-2, Florida rallied in the seventh against Mark Corey (0-2), who walked Hee Seop Choi leading off and allowed Miguel Cabrera's tying double to right-center.

Cabrera was thrown out at third, but Corey walked Mike Lowell and Abraham Nunez. Salomon Torres came in and retired Luis Castillo for the second out of the inning, then allowed Gonzalez's homer on an 0-2 pitch.

Nate Bump (2-3) pitched 1 1/3 hitless innings, and Armando Benitez pitched a perfect ninth for his 28th save in 30 tries.

The defending World Series champions won for just the second time in seven games and avoided dropping to .500.

Josh Fogg started on three days' rest for the Pirates and allowed two runs and eight hits in five innings.

Craig Wilson put the Pirates ahead 1-0 in the fourth with his 17th homer, but Miguel Cabrera had a two-run single in the fifth. That followed a single by Choi, which stopped Florida's skid with runners in scoring position at 0-for-30.

Brewers 4, Cubs 2

MILWAUKEE - Keith Ginter hit a two-run homer off Mark Prior (2-2), and Victor Santos (8-3) won for the sixth time in seven starts, allowing two runs and five hits in 6 2/3 innings for Milwaukee. The Brewers are 43-38, their first winning record at the halfway point since 1998.

After Ginter's homer, Prior struck out eight of the next 13 batters before being lifted for a pinch hitter in the fifth.

Braves 1, Expos 0

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico - Russ Ortiz pitched seven scoreless innings to put Atlanta over .500 for the first time since June 9. The Braves (42-41) have won nine of 12 since June 24, when they were 32-38.

After allowing back-to-back singles to Brad Wilkerson and Endy Chavez to start the game, Ortiz (9-6) retired 14 of the next 16 batters, walking Carl Everett in the first and Wilkerson in the third.

It was the 12th time Montreal has been shut out this season - most in the majors - and the sixth shutout for Atlanta.

Mets 4, Phillies 1

PHILADELPHIA - Al Leiter pitched seven solid innings and Kaz Matsui went 3-for-5 to lead New York.

Leiter (5-2) won for the fourth time in six starts and helped the Mets to their fifth win in their last six games.

The Phillies brought the tying run to the plate in the ninth inning, after Mike Lieberthal and pinch hitter Chase Utley singled against Braden Looper. He then struck out Placido Polanco to get his 17th save in 19 chances this season.

Richard Hidalgo went 2-for-5 with a triple and two RBI for the Mets but didn't hit a home run, ending his team-record streak of games with a homer five.
