Larkin rethinks hanging it up

All-Star asks Reds to cancel farewell event

By John Fay
Enquirer staff writer

ST. LOUIS - Barry Larkin's plans for 2005 might not include retirement after all.

"I'm keeping my options open," the shortstop said Tuesday, when the Reds announced the cancellation of retirement ceremonies in his honor Oct. 2 at Great American Ball Park.

Larkin said he didn't want to have the ceremony, then decide in the offseason, "You know what? I still have the zest. I still have the desire. I still can make a contribution."

Larkin, 40, wants to avoid lingering doubts.

"When I go out, I want to be done with it. I want to be sure."

Larkin has exceeded expectations this season and Sunday was named to the All-Star team for the 12th time.

It was his first selection since 2000.

His first-half success - hitting .295 with 31 RBI going into Tuesday's game - has helped erase memories of what threatened to become a bitter ending with the team last September. Larkin and the Reds were unable to agree on a contract for 2004, and, Sept. 22, Larkin said he was ready to move on. But less than a week later, Larkin and the Reds agreed to a one-year, $700,000 contract, including up to $300,000 in incentives.

Larkin said then that 2004 would be his last season as a player and talked about moving into the front office.

He is a free agent after this season. If he returns to the field, his first choice is to stay with the Reds - but he wants the feeling to be mutual: "It has to be reciprocated," he said.

Reds officials did not tip their hand Tuesday.

"When the season is concluded, we'll visit with Barry," general manager Dan O'Brien said.

John Allen, the team's chief operating officer, did not return a phone call seeking comment.
