NL: Brewers nip Cubs at rowdy Miller

The Associated Press

MILWAUKEE - Light-hitting Craig Counsell provided the only offense on a topsy-turvy Monday in which the Milwaukee Brewers were thrilled to quiet a big, boisterous home crowd behind their All-Star pitching tandem of Ben Sheets and Dan Kolb.

Counsell's rare homer helped Sheets outduel Matt Clement in a 1-0 victory over Chicago before a pro-Cubs crowd of 45,016, the second-largest in Miller Park history.

"It was a great atmosphere. Any time you fill the stadium it's going to be fun," Counsell said.

He said it was hard at times to tell where he was. In the eighth, the crowd got loud when Sammy Sosa came up and singled. The roar was even louder when Luis Vizcaino struck out the next batter, Derrek Lee, to strand two runners.

"When Sosa came up, it felt like it was all Cubs fans in the stadium and then when Vizzie struck out Derrek Lee, it felt like it was all Brewers fans," Counsell said. "The Brewers fans let it be known that they were there, that's for sure."

Rockies 7, Giants 4

SAN FRANCISCO - Jeromy Burnitz hit a two-run double and the Colorado Rockies stretched a winning streak to four for the first time this season.

Burnitz, who slumped in June and hasn't homered in nearly a month, is batting .462 (6-for-13) this season at San Francisco, where Colorado had lost nine straight games. Colorado, which had not won four straight since last July 25-29, scored five runs in the first on the way to winning in San Francisco for the first time since a 4-1 victory on June 2 last year.

Hamilton product Aaron Cook (3-3) pitched five effective innings in his 10th start after his recall from Triple-A Colorado Springs on May 17. Shawn Chacon pitched the ninth for his 18th save in 24 chances. Cook earned his second win in his last six starts, allowing four runs and six hits.

Phillies 6, Mets 5

PHILADELPHIA - Pat Burrell had two hits and two RBI and Ryan Madson (6-2) pitched two scoreless innings in relief of an ineffective Paul Abbott.

The NL East-leading Phillies improved to a season-best seven games over .500 (44-37), including 6-2 during a season-high 14-game homestand.

One day after being selected to his ninth NL All-Star team, Tom Glavine (7-6) gave up six runs and 10 hits in six innings in his worst outing this season.

Pirates 3, Marlins 1

MIAMI - World Series MVP Josh Beckett was pulled after four innings in his first game back from the disabled list, and Pittsburgh's Kip Wells pitched eight shutout innings.

Beckett (4-5), who hadn't started since June 17 because of a lower back strain, allowed two earned runs on five hits in his 73-pitch outing. He was making just his second start since May 30, a day before he went on the disabled list because of a blister on his right middle finger.

Braves 11, Expos 4

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico - Andruw Jones hit a three-run homer in a six-run first inning and Chipper Jones had four RBI. A day after scoring nine runs in the fifth inning of a 10-4 win over Boston, Atlanta sent 16 batters to the plate in the first two innings and built an 8-0 lead.

La Salle High product Zach Day (5-9) was chased after 47 pitches, allowing eight runs and eight hits in 1 1-3 innings.
