Reds notebook: Matthews to have elbow surgery

Griffey, Casey are star-gazing; Will know today if they'll represent NL July 13

By Kevin Kelly
Enquirer staff writer

The Reds placed left-hander Mike Matthews (2-1) on the disabled list Saturday, and recalled right-hander Ryan Wagner from Triple-A Louisville.

Matthews will have surgery Tuesday to remove bone chips from his elbow.

STAR-GAZING: The experience never gets old, not even for Ken Griffey Jr.

The Reds center fielder, along with as many as five of his teammates, will learn today whether they've been chosen to represent the National League in the All-Star Game on July 13 in Houston.

"You always look forward to it," the 11-time All Star said. "You're playing for your respective league."

Both All-Star rosters will be announced at 7 p.m. today on ESPN.

In the latest NL voting update released Monday, Griffey trailed only Barry Bonds among outfielders. Sammy Sosa was third.

Reds first baseman Sean Casey, shortstop Barry Larkin and left fielder Adam Dunn also received numerous votes and are reserve candidates.

"I'm kind of sitting on the edge of my seat waiting to see what happens," said Casey, a two-time NL All-Star. "It would be nice, but if it doesn't happen, hey, there are a lot of other worthy guys out there."

Reds closer Danny Graves, whose 30 saves through Friday led the majors and were two shy of his career high, probably will be considered for the NL pitching staff along with starter Paul Wilson.

Wilson began the season 7-0, but had not won since May 25 before beating the Indians on Saturday.

"It would be great," said Graves, an All-Star in 2000. "But I'm totally not looking for anything to happen."

INJURY UPDATE I: The Reds' starting lineup Saturday did not include Griffey or Casey for the fifth consecutive game.

Griffey, who has a lingering cramp in his left calf, worked out before the game and will be a game-time decision today.

"I don't want to be in a situation where I only play four or five innings and have to come out with tightness," said Griffey, who was available to pinch-hit Saturday. "When I'm ready to go, I want to just go out there and play nine."

Griffey said the condition is nothing more than a cramp due to dehydration, and not a muscle strain like he suffered in spring training.

"It's nowhere near what I experienced in spring training," Griffey said.

INJURY UPDATE II: Casey was scheduled to work out before Saturday's game, and remains day-to-day.

"I'd like to come back (Saturday), but I also don't want to go back to square one," he said. "That's not going to help anybody either. When I come back I want to be back for the rest of the season and not have to worry about it."

WISHFUL THINKING: An electric chair massager worked on Jacob Cruz's back Saturday afternoon, but it was the utility player's right elbow that kept him out of the starting lineup.

Cruz was hit on the elbow by a Bob Howry pitch in the eighth inning Friday.

"I was looking for a fastball in that situation," Cruz said. "I just wasn't looking for it to hit my elbow."

Though both benches had been warned after Reds reliever Phil Norton threw behind Ronnie Belliard in the sixth inning, Howry was not ejected for hitting Cruz.

Did Cruz think the beaning was intentional?

"I know Howry," he said. "He's a good friend of mine so I know he didn't mean to do it intentionally.

"I hope not."

ODDS AND ENDS: Right fielder Austin Kearns, who had surgery Friday to remove a bone spur, scar tissue and a lesion from the base of his right thumb, stopped by the Reds clubhouse and trainer's room before the game. ... Third baseman Tim Hummel was one of six players who received votes for National League Rookie of the Month for June. Hummel batted .366 with three doubles and one home run last month. ... Friday's game between Class A Dayton and South Bend went a franchise-record 18 innings and lasted 5 hours, 33 minutes. Dayton won 7-6 on a run-scoring single by infielder Habelito Hernandez.

REDS FACT: Ken Griffey Jr. is tied for eighth place on the all-time interleague home run list with 30.
