NL: Hill keys Pirates' sweep of Cards

The Associated Press

PITTSBURGH - Bobby Hill drove in the winning run with a two-out, pinch-hit single in the ninth inning to lead the Pittsburgh Pirates over St. Louis 6-5 Wednesday, completing their first three-game sweep of the Cardinals at home in nearly 15 years.

Julian Tavarez replaced Cardinals starter Matt Morris to start the ninth and got the first two hitters, but Jack Wilson and Rob Mackowiak singled - each had three hits - and Hill lined a single into right field on a 2-1 pitch to score Wilson.

Jose Mesa (2-0) blew his first save opportunity in 18 chances but got his second victory of the series.

St. Louis hadn't been swept in a three-game series in Pittsburgh since Sept. 25-27, 1989, though the Pirates did sweep a four-game series in 1992.

"We got swept by a team we really should beat up on, no offense to the Pirates," Morris said.

Giants 7, Dodgers 1

LOS ANGELES - Barry Bonds hit a three-run homer for his 1,300th career extra-base hit, and Brett Tomko came within two outs of a shutout for San Francisco.

Diamondbacks 8, Padres 5

PHOENIX - Danny Bautista hit a go-ahead double in the seventh inning and Arizona stopped its franchise-record losing streak at 11 games. Chad Tracy had a three-run homer, Quinton McCracken hit a two-run drive and Luis Gonzalez a run-scoring double as the Diamondbacks rebounded from one-run deficits three times for their first win since June 17.

Brewers 5, Rockies 4

DENVER - Ben Sheets struck out eight in seven-plus innings and Junior Spivey homered, helping Milwaukee to its fourth straight victory. Chad Moeller added three hits and drove in a run for the Brewers, who are on their longest winning streak since taking 10 straight last August.

Braves 9, Marlins 6

ATLANTA - J.D. Drew homered twice and tied a career high with five RBI for Atlanta, and Sam McConnell earned his first major-league win.

Mike Lowell and Miguel Cabrera both homered for Florida, which lost for the fifth time in seven games.

Expos 6, Phillies 3

PHILADELPHIA - Juan Rivera hit a go-ahead RBI single with two outs in the eighth inning, and Montreal overcame Jim Thome's major league-leading 27th homer.

Tony Batista and Brad Wilkerson homered for the Expos, who were 0-37 when trailing after seven innings dating to Sept. 16, 2003.

Thome's homer, a two-run shot, was his 15th in June, tying the club record for most in a month set by Cy Williams in 1923. The Phillies finished June with 44 home runs, two more than their previous high for a month set in June 1977.

Astros 3, Cubs 2

CHICAGO - Carlos Beltran homered off LaTroy Hawkins (1-1) with two outs in the ninth for Houston.

Roger Clemens' bid for his 11th victory was blown by Dan Miceli, who allowed Michael Barrett's eighth-inning homer, which tied the score at 2-all.

Brad Lidge (2-3), who worked out of a bases-loaded jam after the Cubs tied it in the eighth, got the final six outs.
