NEW YORK - Shea Stadium is probably the last place Paul Wilson would have picked for his winning streak to end.
But that's where the string snapped for Wilson Tuesday night. The Mets beat Wilson 7-4 before a crowd of 19,301. The Mets have won five consecutive games.
It was the first time Wilson, the Mets' first pick and the No.1 overall selection in the 1994 draft, has lost a decision since Aug. 12 of last season when Arizona beat him 2-0.
Tuesday, Wilson let a 4-1 lead slip away. He allowed runs in three consecutive innings.
Wilson went 6 2/3 innings, allowing six runs on nine hits. He struck out a season-high nine and walked one.
He clearly had good stuff, but he couldn't do what he's done all year: Avoid pitching mistakes. Wilson gave up two home runs.
The Reds' offense, which produced four runs on four hits after three innings, only produced one hit in the next five innings.
Wilson (7-1) has not won since May 25 - though it was through little fault of his won. He had been the victim of a blown save in his last three starts.
Adam Dunn gave Wilson a 1-0 lead by leading off the second with his 20th home run of the year - a towering shot to right that easily cleared the Mets' bullpen. It traveled an estimated 420 feet.
The Mets tied it in the bottom of the second. Cliff Floyd hit one nearly the same place as Dunn - just not quite as far.
The Reds scored three in the third and were a hit or two from really breaking it open.
D'Angelo Jimenez led off by dropping a single into right. An out later, Ken Griffey Jr. hit a screamer that went over first base for a single.
Adam Dunn got Jimenez in with a ground-rule double to left-center. Jason LaRue made it 3-1 with a bloop single to right.
Jermaine Clark doubled into the right field corner to get another run.
Mets starter Keith Ginter left runners on second and third by striking out Brandon Larson and Wilson.
Wilson showed some real fortitude in the third. Clark misplayed a routine fly ball off the bat of Ginter that resulted in a double to start the inning. Wilson struck out Kaz Matsui and Jose Reyes and then got Mike Piazza to bounce out to end the inning.
Wilson gave up three hits to start the fourth - the last one an RBI double from former Red Mike Cameron. Another former Red, Eric Valent, got another run home with a groundout
Pinch-hitter Shane Spencer tied the game with a single that scored Cameron.
The Mets took the lead in the fifth. Mike Piazza hit one out to left for his 16th of the year.
The five earned runs were the most Wilson allowed since April 18 when he gave up six to the Chicago Cubs on a day when a gale-force wind was blowing out at Wrigley.
Wilson had not given up more than two earned runs in any of his last seven starts.
The Mets added another earned run in the sixth but it was due to a defensive lapse. Clark tried to make a diving catch on Cameron's sinking line drive to lead off the inning. It got by him and went to wall for a triple. An out later, Valent's sacrifice fly scored Cameron.
