CHICAGO - Michael Barrett's two-run double in the bottom of the ninth inning gave the Chicago Cubs a 4-3 victory over the Oakland Athletics on Saturday.

Mark Mulder outpitched Mark Prior in a marquee matchup, helping Oakland take a 3-2 lead into the ninth. But with closer Arthur Rhodes absent, Chad Bradford (3-4) couldn't hold it.

Pinch-hitter Todd Hollandsworth started the winning rally with a one-out infield single. Todd Walker had a pinch-hit single, and both scored on Barrett's drive down the right-field line.

Derrek Lee went 4-for-4 for the Cubs, and Barrett had three RBIs. Kyle Farnsworth (2-3) pitched a scoreless ninth for the win.

Giants 6, Red Sox 4

SAN FRANCISCO - Pinch-hitter Edgardo Alfonzo delivered a two-run homer with two outs in the eighth inning to lead San Francisco over Boston.

Pedro Martinez pitched to Barry Bonds in a highly anticipated matchup between the six-time NL MVP and three-time Cy Young Award winner.

Bonds finished 0-for-4 with a strikeout. He came in hitting .367 lifetime with a homer against Martinez.

The Boston right-hander allowed four runs in six innings.

Alfonzo connected against Alan Embree (2-1) for his first career pinch-hit homer, snapping a 4-4 tie.

Matt Herges (3-2) got the win despite blowing his fourth save.

The Red Sox tied it in the eighth on pinch-hitter Trot Nixon's two-run single, taking Martinez off the hook.

Yankees 6, Dodgers 2

LOS ANGELES - Hideki Matsui hit a three-run homer in his first at-bat against Hideo Nomo, and Brad Halsey won his major league debut in New York's victory over Los Angeles.

Halsey (1-0) also got his first career hit with a single off Nomo in the second. Nomo responded by hitting a home run against Halsey in the fifth.

Matsui reached out and pulled an 0-2 pitch from Nomo (3-8) just inside the right-field foul pole for his 12th homer, giving the Yankees a 4-0 lead in the first inning.

It was the first time Matsui ever faced Nomo, though both starred for years in Japan. Matsui played in the Central League while Nomo was in the Pacific League - and their careers in Japan only coincided from 1993-94.

Angels 6, Astros 4

HOUSTON - Ramon Ortiz pitched six scoreless innings, Vladimir Guerrero homered and drove in three runs and Anaheim handed Roger Clemens his second straight loss with a win over the Astros.

Ortiz (3-5) easily outpitched Clemens, allowing only three hits with five strikeouts in his best start of the season.

Francisco Rodriguez got three outs for his sixth save, helping Anaheim snap a three-game losing streak.

After starting the season with nine straight wins, Clemens (9-2) looked nearly as bad in this game as he did last time out.

He lasted only 4 2-3 innings - his shortest outing of the season - and gave up five runs on nine hits with only three strikeouts. In his last outing, a 7-2 loss to the Chicago Cubs, Clemens allowed five runs on a season-high 10 hits.

Mariners 5, Pirates 1

PITTSBURGH - Joel Pineiro limited Pittsburgh to one run over eight innings in his second straight strong start, and Rich Aurilia drove in three runs to lead Seattle.

Pineiro (3-8) gave up four hits, including Bobby Hill's homer leading off eighth.

Aurilia, back in the lineup after not starting consecutive games, had a run-scoring single in the fifth and a two-run single in the sixth to give Seattle all the offense it needed in its third consecutive victory.

Sean Burnett (0-1) recalled from Triple-A Nashville to make his second career start retired his first 12 batters. He left in the sixth after Ichiro Suzuki's line drive hit him in his upper left arm, resulting in a large bruise but no other damage.

Braves 4, Indians 0

ATLANTA - Paul Byrd pitched seven shutout innings in his first start since 2002, and Eli Marrero and Julio Franco hit two-run homers to lead the Braves over Cleveland.

Giving the slumping Braves a needed lift, Byrd held the Indians to four hits and did not walk a batter. The Braves had lost three straight and seven of 10 to fall four games under .500 this late in the season for the first time since 1990.

Byrd (1-0) was making his first major league start since Sept. 25, 2002, for Kansas City against the Chicago White Sox. He had Tommy John surgery on July 1, 2003, and was activated from the disabled list earlier Saturday.

John Smoltz got an out in the eighth with runners on first and second and pitched a perfect ninth for his 11th save.

Jake Westbrook (6-3) gave up eight hits and four runs in five innings. He gave up just three earned runs in his first three starts this month.

Brewers 7, Twins 6

MILWAUKEE - Geoff Jenkins hit a tiebreaking homer leading off the eighth inning and the Brewers rallied from a five-run deficit to beat Minnesota.

The Brewers were down 5-0 before going ahead with a six-run seventh. Milwaukee got just one runner past second base in the first six innings.

Luis Rivas homered in the eighth to get Minnesota even again but Jenkins sent the first pitch he saw from Terry Mulholland (0-3) deep into the right-field stands.

Luis Vizcaino (2-2) got the victory despite allowing Rivas' home run. Dan Kolb pitched the ninth for his 21st save in 22 chances.

Phillies 4, Royals 2

PHILADELPHIA - Jim Thome hit his major league-leading 21st homer, Eric Milton earned his ninth win and the Phillies defeated Kansas.

Placido Polanco also homered for the Phillies in their first victory over Kansas City since Game 6 of the 1980 World Series.

Milton (9-1) pitched effectively into the eighth inning, tying Roger Clemens, Randy Johnson and Kenny Rogers for the most wins in the majors.

The left-hander allowed six hits, walked three and tied a season high with eight strikeouts.

Billy Wagner worked the ninth for his 10th save in 12 opportunities. He gave up an RBI single to Carlos Beltran.

Zack Greinke (1-3), the youngest player in the majors, worked six innings, giving up three runs and five hits. He walked one and struck out six.

Rockies 11, Orioles 6

DENVER - Preston Wilson drove in four runs in his second game since coming off the disabled list and Jeff Fassero (1-6) threw five-plus solid innings to win for the first time in nearly a year, lifting Colorado over Baltimore.

Vinny Castilla drove in three runs, Todd Helton drove in two, and Royce Clayton had two RBIs and scored four runs for Colorado, which has won four of five since an eight-game losing streak. Wilson, who missed 58 games due to knee surgery, was 2-for-3.

The Rockies scored five runs in the third inning off Eric DuBose (5-5) and three more in the fourth to win consecutive series for the first time since beating San Francisco and Los Angeles last July.

Javy Lopez was 3-for-5 and Rafael Palmeiro had three RBIs for Baltimore, which matched a season high with its seventh straight loss despite getting 14 hits.

Expos 17, White Sox 14

MONTREAL - Juan Rivera hit two homers in the second inning, including his first career grand slam, and the Expos built a 10-run lead before holding on for a wild win over the Chicago White Sox.

Juan Uribe had a career-high seven RBIs for the White Sox.

Rivera drove in six runs in the inning, tying Andre Dawson's team record with a two-run homer and a grand slam in the second off Arnie Munoz (0-1), who made his major league debut.

Montreal, which ended a seven-game losing streak, scored nine of its 11 runs off Munoz in the second for its biggest inning in nearly five years.

Rivera became the first major league player to hit two homers in one inning since Pittsburgh's Reggie Sanders on Aug. 20.

Trailing 11-1 through three, Chicago scored five in the fourth. While Montreal scored runs in each of the next three innings, the White Sox scored three in the sixth and four in the seventh to draw to within 15-13.

Jeremy Fikac (1-2), got two outs in the seventh for the win despite allowing two singles which drove in three runs.

Rangers 7, Marlins 6

MIAMI - Eric Young drove in three runs, Kevin Mench hit a two-run homer and Texas held on to beat Florida.

The Rangers got plenty of help from the Marlins. They committed three errors, including one by Alex Gonzalez in the second that led to three unearned runs. The teams combined for five errors that led to five unearned runs.

Dontrelle Willis (6-4) had one of his shortest outings of the season, giving up nine hits and seven runs - four earned - in 4 2-3 innings.

Reliever R.A. Dickey (5-6) allowed two hits and struck out two in two scoreless innings.

Mets 4, Tigers 3, 10 innings

NEW YORK - Jose Reyes' 10th-inning triple set up Mike Cameron's second game-winning hit in two nights, and the New York Mets beat Detroit.

Just off the disabled list after missing the first 66 games of the season, Reyes was in the middle of the Mets' two key rallies.

Reyes, who had been out since straining his right hamstring in spring training March 14, drove in a run in the eighth on a grounder and scored on Cliff Floyd's two-out single to tie the game at 3.

With one out in the 10th, Reyes tripled to right-center off Craig Dingman (1-1). Two intentional walks loaded the bases, and Reyes was forced at the plate on pinch-hitter Shane Spencer's grounder.

But Cameron, whose ninth-inning homer won Friday night's game, followed with a drive to the left-field warning track for a game-winning single.

Braden Looper (2-1) struck out three in two perfect innings for his second win in two nights.

Padres 3, Blue Jays 2

SAN DIEGO - Trevor Hoffman earned his 367th career save to tie Jeff Reardon for fourth on the career list, and the Padres rallied with two runs in the eighth inning to beat Toronto and end its season-high six-game losing streak.

Brian Giles had a tying single and Ryan Klesko a go-ahead double for the Padres in the eighth off Justin Speier (1-5).

Hoffman allowed a leadoff single in the ninth before retiring the side for his 15th save in 17 chances this year. It was his first since May 30 against Milwaukee.

Scott Linebrink (3-1) pitched the eighth for the win.

Devil Rays 11, Diamondbacks 4

PHOENIX - Tino Martinez drove in five runs with a homer and a double, powering Tampa Bay to its 10th consecutive win.

The Devil Rays are a major league-best 10-1 in interleague play and have won 21 of 27 games. On Saturday, they rallied from a 3-0 deficit with seven runs in the second inning, highlighted by Martinez's two-run shot. Reliever Rob Bell (2-3) pitched seven innings of four-hit ball for Tampa Bay.

The victory was No. 1,413 for Tampa Bay manager Lou Piniella, tying him with Miller Huggins for 20th on the career list.

Lance Cormier (0-1), who got four outs while giving up seven runs on six hits and a walk in his major league debut.
