DENVER - Baltimore Orioles left fielder B.J. Surhoff was placed on the 15-day disabled list Saturday because of a strained left calf.
Surhoff was injured Friday night against the Colorado Rockies while running out to his position in the fourth inning. He came out of the game and had a hard time getting up the stairs to the dugout before batting practice Saturday.
"It could be a week to 10 days, and we didn't have a choice," Orioles manager Lee Mazzilli said of putting Surhoff on the DL. "... We needed (to get) somebody here."
That player is infielder Jose Leon, who was recalled from Triple-A Ottawa a day after being sent down.
But it will be hard to replace Surhoff, who was hitting .321 and had an eight-game hitting streak heading into Friday's game - particularly with the injuries that have plagued the Orioles recently.
Right-hander Rick Bauer was placed on the disabled list Friday due to nerve irritation in his elbow, and third baseman Melvin Mora missed his second straight game after straining a ligament in his foot Thursday.
First baseman David Segui (knee), outfielder Marty Cordova (knee) and left-hander Omar Daal (shoulder) are already on the disabled list, and outfielder Luis Matos was going to be used only in an emergency Saturday because he's nursing sore ribs.
INDIANS: Pitcher Cliff Lee was suspended for six games for throwing behind Ken Griffey Jr.'s head.
Lee's fastball whizzed behind Griffey in the fourth inning last Sunday. That pitch came an inning after Lee gave up the 499th home run of Griffey's career.
Lee, who maintained he wasn't trying to hit Griffey, is appealing the suspension.
GIANTS: Closer Robb Nen was sent home for another month to rest his injured right shoulder.
"Each day that goes by makes it less likely he'll return this year," trainer Stan Conte said.
The inflammation in the back of Nen's shoulder is gone, but the Giants want him to remain idle for now. The 34-year-old Nen rejoined his teammates Wednesday after spending a month at home in Orange County, Calif., where he was limited to cardiovascular work to stay in shape.
BRAVES: Center fielder Andruw Jones twisted his left knee in batting practice and was held out of the starting lineup Saturday night against Cleveland. He had been the only Brave to start every game this season.
CUBS: Chicago activated second baseman Mark Grudzielanek from the 15-day disabled list. He had been out since April 10 with inflammation of his right Achilles' tendon.
METS: The team's long wait for Jose Reyes ended when the second baseman was activated following three months of injuries. Reyes started at second base, batting second, against Detroit.
Reyes' troubles began when he strained his right hamstring in a spring training game March 14. After that, back pain kept him out.
All that was forgotten Saturday. He arrived at Shea Stadium six hours before the first pitch.
"It's like old times," Reyes said as he looked around the clubhouse. "I am so happy to get here."
