Former Brave downs Atlanta

The Associated Press

ATLANTA - Darrell May beat his former team for the first time and Desi Relaford went 3-for-5 with three RBI to lead the Kansas City Royals past the Atlanta Braves 10-4 Thursday.

The Royals improved their AL-worst road record to 9-21 with their second victory in a row.

Relaford homered for the first time this season, Carlos Beltran went 2-for-3 with a home run and Dee Brown added two RBI singles for Kansas City.

Pirates 5, Angels 2

PITTSBURGH - Tike Redman and Jack Wilson homered in Pittsburgh's go-ahead seventh inning, and the Pirates beat Anaheim for Kris Benson's first home victory in more than a year.

Redman began the game in a 4-for-28 slump but hit two homers during a 3-for-4 night. He added a two-run drive in the eighth against reliever Kevin Gregg.

Benson (5-6) overcame two run-scoring hits by Garret Anderson to win in PNC Park for the first time since beating Arizona on May 10, 2003. He was 0-2 with a 7.48 ERA in four home starts this season, and 0-6 with a 6.30 ERA in 11 starts since.

Phillies 6, Tigers 2, 1st game

Tigers 5, Phillies 4 (11), 2nd game

PHILADELPHIA - Carlos Guillen's two-out RBI single in the 11th inning led Detroit past the Philadelphia Phillies, giving the Tigers a split of a day-night doubleheader.

In the opener, Jason Michaels homered and drove in four runs, leading the Phillies past the Tigers 6-2.

The nightcap was delayed 51 minutes by rain before the sixth inning, the fourth straight day weather affected a Phillies game.

Twins 6, Expos 4

MONTREAL - Matthew LeCroy hit his third pinch-hit homer in three at-bats this season, and the Minnesota Twins rallied to beat the Montreal Expos for a three-game sweep.

Torii Hunter's RBI double in the eighth inning put Minnesota ahead to stay, sending the Expos to their sixth consecutive loss.

Jose Vidro homered and singled for Montreal to reach 1,000 career hits.

Marlins 2, White Sox 1, 11 innings

MIAMI - Pinch hitter Matt Treanor singled home the winning run with two outs in the 11th inning, and the Florida Marlins won after losing Josh Beckett to another injury.

The 2003 World Series MVP left his start in the fourth with a muscle strain on the side of his back. He had just returned from a 15-day stint on the disabled list because of a blister on his right middle finger.

The hard-throwing right-hander is day-to-day.

Diamondbacks 6, Yankees 1

PHOENIX - Knuckleballer Steve Sparks allowed one run in seven innings and Juan Brito hit his first major-league home run for Arizona.

Sparks (3-4) allowed only three hits, including Alex Rodriguez's 456-foot home run, and walked seven. The Diamondbacks used strong defense to salvage the finale of the three-game series.
