Williams' daughter quits fight for father

The Associated Press

INVERNESS, Fla. - The daughter and son-in-law of the late Ted Williams have ended their two-year fight to have the baseball great's remains removed from an Arizona cryonics lab.

Bobby-Jo and Mark Ferrell spent close to $100,000 battling Williams' estate and his son, John Henry Williams. But when the money ran out, so did their will to keep trying, and a settlement was signed Tuesday.

"It's over," their attorney, John Heer, said Wednesday. "There's just no way they could've afforded to litigate this thing."

PIRATES: Right-hander Kip Wells left the team Wednesday to have his troublesome right hand examined by a Wake Forest University surgeon.

Wells hasn't pitched past the fifth inning in his last two starts, saying he was bothered by a lack of feeling in his right middle finger.

Wells underwent tests earlier this week, and it was decided he also would be examined by David Ruch, a hand surgeon at Wake Forest University Health Services.

SHORT HOPS: The Mets placed catcher Vance Wilson on the 15-day disabled list because of a strained right hamstring and purchased the contract of catcher Tom Wilson from Triple-A Norfolk.

• Carl Everett was activated from the 15-day disabled list. Limited to 16 games, Everett is batting .246 with just one homer.

• Toronto All-Star outfielder Vernon Wells was put on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right calf. Wells joins slugger Carlos Delgado on the DL.
