Sunday's interleague games

By The Associated Press

BALTIMORE - Barry Bonds hit his 676th homer and drove in three runs, leading San Francisco past Sidney Ponson and the Orioles.

Baltimore pitched to Bonds four times in five trips to the plate, and twice the slugger made the Orioles pay. He hit a two-run shot in the third and singled in a run in the sixth to make it 4-2.

Bonds' homer gave him 500 with San Francisco, making the Giants' franchise the first in baseball history to have three players hit 500 with the club. Willie Mays had 646 and Mel Ott hit 511.

Jerome Williams (6-4) allowed three runs and six hits in 7 1-3 innings, and Tyler Walker got four outs for his first major league save.

Ponson (3-8) gave up a career-high 13 hits and six runs in 6 2-3 innings, losing his fifth straight start.

Yankees 6, Padres 5, 12 innings

NEW YORK - After San Diego took a three-run lead in the 12th, the Yankees rallied for the second time, beating the Padres behind Jorge Posada's tying double and pinch-hitter Ruben Sierra's game-winning sacrifice fly.

Hideki Matsui and pinch-hitter Kenny Lofton hit consecutive homers with two outs in the ninth against Trevor Hoffman to tie it.

In David Wells' return to Yankee Stadium, the 41-year-old left-hander allowed five hits in seven shutout innings in his first start against his former team since signing with the Padres during the offseason.

Felix Heredia (1-1) pitched one-third of an inning for the win. Rod Beck (0-1) allowed four runs and three hits in just one-third of an inning.

Diamondbacks 5, Blue Jays 3

TORONTO - Randy Johnson struck out 11 and won his sixth straight start for Arizona.

Johnson (9-4) started his run with a perfect game against Atlanta on May 18. The 40-year-old left-hander is tied with 41-year-old Roger Clemens and 39-year-old Kenny Rogers for the most wins in the majors.

It was the 196th time Johnson has struck out 10 or more in a game. He allowed two runs on six hits and two walks in six-plus innings.

Jose Valverde retired pinch-hitter Howie Clark for his eighth save in 10 chances.

Ted Lilly (5-3) lost for the first time since April 21 against Boston - a span of 10 starts.

White Sox 10, Braves 3

CHICAGO - Mark Buehrle pitched eight solid innings, Carlos Lee extended his hitting streak to 27 games for the White Sox.

Lee lined a double to the left-field wall in the first inning, increasing the longest hitting streak in the majors this season. He matched the franchise record set by Albert Belle in 1997 and Luke Appling in 1936.

Joe Crede homered and had three RBIs, Frank Thomas added a solo shot and Juan Uribe had a pair of doubles and two RBIs.

Buehrle (7-1) won his sixth straight decision.

Braves left-hander Mike Hampton was a late scratch because of a bruised left biceps. Travis Smith (0-3) started in his place and gave up five runs in four innings.

Marlins 9, Tigers 2

DETROIT - Dontrelle Willis allowed seven hits in his second complete game of the season and Juan Pierre went 4-for-5 with an inside-the-park homer for Florida.

The Marlins avoided being swept in the three-game series and snapped Detroit's four-game winning streak.

Pierre, the Marlins' leadoff man, and No. 2 hitter Luis Castillo were a combined 7-for-10 with two walks, six runs scored, three RBIs and a stolen base.

Willis (6-3) struck out eight and didn't walk a batter in his fourth career complete game.

Jason Johnson (4-7) allowed four runs and eight hits in three-plus innings.

Devil Rays 3, Rockies 2

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - Julio Lugo singled home the winning run with one out in the ninth, and Tampa Bay handed Colorado its season-worst eighth consecutive loss.

Carl Crawford hit a one-out single off Shawn Chacon (0-4) and stole second uncontested. Lugo drove in Crawford with his single to center, giving the Devil Rays their fifth straight victory.

Jesus Colome (1-0) struck out three in 1 1-3 scoreless innings for the win.

Tampa Bay (26-34) has its best record ever after 60 games. The Devil Rays are 16-6 since May 20.

Cardinals 13, Rangers 2

ARLINGTON, Texas - Scott Rolen hit a two-run homer and an RBI double in the first two innings for St. Louis, which improved the majors' best road rcord to 23-12.

The Cardinals led 10-0 after batting around in each of the first two innings and avoided their first losing trip of the season.

Woody Williams (4-6) didn't allow a hit until Mark Teixeira's leadoff single in the fifth, when the Cardinals already led 13-0.

R.A. Dickey (4-6) gave up nine runs on eight hits and three walks over 1 1-3 innings, the shortest of his 26 career starts.

Phillies 2, Twins 1

MINNEAPOLIS - Cristian Guzman's errant throw on a potential double-play grounder in the eighth inning allowed Placido Polanco to score the go-ahead run for Philadelphia.

With the bases loaded and one out, the Phillies' Chase Utley hit a sharp grounder to second baseman Luis Rivas, who flipped to Guzman for a force play. But the shortstop's relay throw pulled first baseman Doug Mientkiewicz off the bag as Utley hustled down the line.

Polanco opened the inning with a double off Aaron Fultz (2-2), and walks to Bobby Abreu and Pat Burrell loaded the bases with one out.

Rheal Cormier (3-3) pitched a scoreless seventh for the win, and Billy Wagner worked the ninth for his ninth save.

Mets 5, Royals 2

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Tom Glavine took over the major league ERA lead and Mike Piazza backed him with a two-run homer that helped the Mets stop a five-game losing streak.

Glavine (7-3) lowered his ERA to 2.03, moving ahead of Houston's Roger Clemens (2.08). Glavine allowed two runs - one earned - and four hits in 7 2-3 innings, striking out five and walking one.

Kansas City center fielder Carlos Beltran bruised his left knee crashing into the center-field wall trying to catch Piazza's homer. The Royals said Beltran was day to day.

Zack Greinke (1-2) allowed five runs in seven innings.

Mariners 8, Expos 1

SEATTLE - Joel Pineiro ended his seven-game losing streak and the Mariners completed their first sweep of the season.

Pineiro (2-8) won for the first time in 10 starts since April 18. He pitched eight innings and gave up one run and six hits.
