OAKLAND, Calif. - Pittsburgh reliever Salomon Torres and manager Lloyd McClendon were ejected from Saturday's game against Oakland after the right-hander threw two consecutive pitches behind Damian Miller in the eighth inning.
Torres' first pitch sailed behind Miller, and plate umpire Kerwin Danley warned both sides. A's reliever Justin Duchscherer had hit Pirates catcher Jason Kendall with a pitch in the top of the inning.
Torres' next pitch also went behind Miller, earning an instant ejection. McClendon also was ejected as a result.
The A's and Pirates combined to hit five batters during Friday night's 6-1 Oakland victory.
The Pirates have been hit by a major league-leading 42 pitches.
MARINERS: In an effort to jump-start his struggling offense, Seattle manager Bob Melvin moved Ichiro Suzuki from the leadoff spot to No. 3 in the batting order for Saturday's game against Montreal.
The last-place Mariners ended a 29-inning scoreless innings streak with Pat Borders' run-scoring single in the ninth inning for a 1-0 victory over the Expos on Friday night. They hadn't scored a run since Monday night.
"I said all along, if we have some struggles in the middle of the order and we felt like we weren't scoring some runs, it got to a point where we needed to change things up a little bit," Melvin said. "This is the day."
Saturday night's game was only the fourth that Suzuki, 30, has batted third in the majors.
The Mariners have been shut out seven times this season, including Tuesday and Wednesday nights by Houston, the most in the AL this season.
"Obviously, we've been having a tough time scoring runs," Melvin said. "Sometimes when you change things up a little bit, guys are in different spots and it kind of takes the pressure off a little bit."
BLUE JAYS: Toronto activated Cy Young Award winner Roy Halladay from the 15-day disabled list Saturday. Halladay was the Blue Jays' starter Saturday and earned his sixth win of the season.
RANGERS: Texas activated outfielder Kevin Mench before Saturday night's game against the St. Louis Cardinals. Mench has been on the disabled list since May 24 with a left oblique strain. He entered hitting .289 with five homers and 21 RBI.
YANKEES: Kenny Lofton was activated from the disabled list Saturday by the New York Yankees, who designated second baseman Homer Bush for assignment.
