AAA: Louisville drops doubleheader

By The Associated Press

MOOSIC, Pa. - Robert Ellis pitched a seven-inning no-hitter in his first game for Scranton/Wilkes Barre to help the Red Barons to a 1-0 victory and a doubleheader sweep of the Louisville Bats on Sunday in the International League.

The Red Barons won the opener 6-0, with Brian Powell and Seung Hak Lee combining for the shutout.

Ellis, who was traded to the Red Barons on Thursday, was perfect through 5 2-3 innings before giving up a walk with two outs in the sixth inning, then retired four in a row.

With two outs in the seventh, Reggie Taylor hit a high fly ball to shallow right field. Before it landed in Jorge Padilla's glove, Ellis started pumping his fist.

"I can't describe it," he said. "It felt great."

Louisville starter Jesus Sanchez was nearly as good, pitching six innings, striking out eight and giving up just one hit - but that was a solo home run to Mark Smith in the second inning that turned out to be the difference.

In the opener, Powell, making his second major league rehab start, gave up just two hits and struck out four in three innings. Lee pitched the final four innings, striking out three and giving up two hits.

The Red Barons' (33-22) offense was provided by a 3-for-3 night from Jim Rushford, doubles by Anderson Machado and A.J. Hinch and an RBI base hit by Lee, who got his second win of the year. Bubba Nelson took the loss for the Bats (26-30).
