AL: Giambi's baaack

By The Associated Press

NEW YORK - Mike Mussina took a shutout into the ninth inning and Jason Giambi homered in his return from the disabled list, leading the New York Yankees over the Texas Rangers 2-1 Sunday.

Bernie Williams, batting leadoff for the first time in eight years because captain Derek Jeter sat out for the second straight day with a pulled right groin, homered on the first pitch of the fourth inning from Ryan Drese (2-3) to help the Yankees win for the 11th time in 13 games.

Mussina (7-4) won his sixth straight decision and struck out a season-high 10. After he allowed a leadoff triple in the ninth, Mariano Rivera gave up an RBI groundout to Michael Young before retiring Mark Teixeira with runners at the corners for his 23rd save in 24 chances.

Red Sox 5, Royals 3

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Johnny Damon hit a tiebreaking double in a five-run sixth inning, and Boston rallied past Kansas City.

Mike Sweeney hit a two-run homer for the Royals, who lost first baseman Ken Harvey and reliever Jason Grimsley (3-2) when they were hurt in a violent collision in the sixth.

Grimsley and Harvey stayed on the ground and appeared to be in considerable pain before they were taken to a hospital for X-rays. The team said Grimsley's right jaw and left forearm would be examined, as well as Harvey's right wrist and forearm.

Damon had three doubles, and Derek Lowe (5-5) gave up three runs in five innings. Mike Timlin worked three hitless innings, and Keith Foulke pitched the ninth for his 11th save in 12 chances.

Twins 6, Tigers 5

MINNEAPOLIS - Joe Mauer hit his first major league homer, a three-run shot with two outs in the eighth inning to help Minnesota beat Detroit.

Mauer connected against Esteban Yan (0-2), capping a two-out rally and giving the slumping Twins a 6-3 lead. Minnesota held on in the ninth for its first series victory after four straight defeats.

J.C. Romero (3-1) won despite giving up a tying single to pinch-hitter Brandon Inge in the eighth, and Joe Nathan pitched the ninth for his 15th save in 16 chances.

Nathan allowed a leadoff homer to Jason Smith and an RBI single by Ivan Rodriguez, snapping his 21-inning scoreless streak. But the reliever retired Rondell White on a long fly and struck out Bobby Higginson to end it.

Lew Ford and Matthew LeCroy also homered for Minnesota.

Orioles 5, Devil Rays 4

BALTIMORE - Rodrigo Lopez won his second straight start and Rafael Palmeiro and Javy Lopez both had two hits and scored twice, leading Baltimore past Tampa Bay.

B.J. Surhoff drove in two runs for the Orioles, who had lost four in a row since Lopez beat Boston on Monday.

Lopez (5-2), making his fourth start since leaving the bullpen, gave up three runs and 10 hits in 6 1-3 innings.

Jorge Julio worked the ninth for his ninth save, allowing a sacrifice fly to Rocco Baldelli.

Baldelli also homered for the Devil Rays. Rob Bell (1-3) took the loss.

Indians 7, Angels 0

ANAHEIM, Calif. - C.C. Sabathia held Anaheim hitless until the sixth inning, and Omar Vizquel hit a two-run homer in Cleveland's victory.

Sabathia (3-3) won for the first time in four starts, allowing four singles in seven innings. He struck out six and walked two.

David Riske and Matt Miller finished the five-hitter, Cleveland's third straight win and third shutout of the season.

The AL West-leading Angels have lost three in a row.

Victor Martinez doubled in two runs against Bartolo Colon (4-4) in the first inning, and Ronnie Belliard added a two-run double in the fifth to chase the Angels' struggling starter.

Anaheim placed closer Troy Pervical on the 15-day disabled list with inflammation in his right elbow.

Athletics 8, Blue Jays 3

OAKLAND, Calif. - Eric Byrnes' leadoff homer sparked a four-run first inning, and Oakland beat Toronto.

Damian Miller added a two-run single off Jason Kershner (0-1) in the first and Scott Hatteberg broke the game open with a three-run double in the seventh. The A's won for the fifth time in six games and matched a season best at seven games over .500.

Mark Redman (4-3) allowed three runs in five innings for the win, and Oakland closed it out with stellar relief. Justin Duchscherer pitched three hitless innings to lower his ERA to 1.08, and Arthur Rhodes finished.

Mariners 5, White Sox 4

SEATTLE - Billy Koch walked Jolbert Cabrera with the bases loaded and one out in the ninth inning to give the Seattle Mariners a 5-4 victory over the Chicago White Sox on Sunday night.

The Mariners rallied for three runs in the ninth off Koch (1-1), who blew his second save in three games.

Seattle, which had four steals in the inning, tied it when Bret Boone singled to score Randy Winn after he took third.

Winn doubled home Ichiro Suzuki, who stole second after singling, for the first run off Koch.

Willie Bloomquist ran for John Olerud after he walked. Bloomquist stole third and Boone went to second behind him before Koch walked Cabrera on a 3-1 pitch to end it.

Shigetoshi Hasegawa (2-3) pitched the final 1 1-3 innings for Seattle. He didn't allow a run, giving up a single and striking out two.

Carlos Lee extended his career-high hitting streak to 22 games with an RBI single in the third to give Chicago a 1-0 lead. His streak is longest in the majors this season.
