Nine RBI make for career night for Guerrero

The Associated Press

ANAHEIM, Calif. - The Angels have seen Vladimir Guerrero do some freakish things this season, but until Wednesday night no Angel had ever done anything this outlandish.

Guerrero smashed two home runs, crushed a double, had a sacrifice fly and also added a rather well-struck single. Every time he put the ball in play, he drove in at least one run. At the end of the night, he had nine RBI in the Angels' 10-7 victory over the Boston Red Sox at Angel Stadium, setting a career high and a team record for RBI.

No major-leaguer had driven in as many runs since Bill Mueller did it last year for the Red Sox in Texas.

Angels manager Mike Scioscia has been in the game for 25 years, but until Wednesday he had not seen a player have such a night.

"Not in terms of hitting all pitches, in different locations, from different pitchers," Scioscia said. "He came up in the clutch and broke the game open. He was on top of every pitch in every at-bat."

Guerrero, not one for superlatives, said the ball didn't look like a beach ball floating in the strike zone.

"It looked the same. I was just lucky tonight," he said.

Guerrero upstaged teammate David Eckstein, who is a big part of the reason Guerrero has climbed atop the American League RBI standings at 49. Eckstein is on a 17-game hitting streak and had five hits, a career high.
