SAN FRANCISCO - Jason Schmidt provided the perfect sendoff for San Francisco's longest road trip in 15 years, taking a shutout into the ninth inning to lead the Giants to their ninth straight win, 3-1 over the Colorado Rockies on Sunday.
Michael Tucker hit a two-run homer off Joe Kennedy (4-3) and Pedro Feliz went 3-for-3 with an RBI for the Giants, who have a winning record for the first time since April 14. After sweeping the Rockies and Diamondbacks in a six-game homestand, the Giants start a 14-game trip Monday in Arizona.
The Rockies could manage only a first-inning double by Todd Helton and a single in the fifth by Charles Johnson off Schmidt (6-2) and lost for the 10th time in 11 games.
Schmidt struck out 11 and allowed only one batter to reach second before being replaced by Jason Christiansen following a leadoff walk in the ninth.
Matt Herges gave up a run-scoring triple to Jeromy Burnitz, a catchable fly that center fielder Marquis Grissom lost in the sun, before finishing for his 16th save.
Padres 5, Brewers 2
MILWAUKEE - Brian Giles had a two-run triple and Phil Nevin homered to help Ismael Valdez win for the first time in over a month, leading San Diego over the Brewers.
Valdez (4-2) allowed nine hits and two runs in seven innings as he won for the first time since April 27 against Montreal.
Valdez helped his cause with an RBI ground-rule double with two outs in the sixth inning.
Trevor Hoffman pitched the ninth for his 14th save in 15 opportunities.
Victor Santos (2-2) lost his second straight start as he gave up eight hits and five runs in six innings.
Cubs 12, Pirates 1
PITTSBURGH - Derrek Lee broke a 1-for-20 slide with three hits and four RBIs, and the Chicago Cubs stopped a five-game losing streak.
Carlos Zambrano (5-2) struck out eight in six innings to beat Pittsburgh for the third time this season, helping end Chicago's longest skid since Sept. 22-27, 2002. He allowed one run and eight hits, walked three and hit three batters.
Aramis Ramirez and Michael Barrett also had three hits apiece for Chicago, which matched its season highs for runs and hits (17).
With the score 1-1 in the seventh, Chicago went ahead. Moises Alou reached against John Grabow (0-2) on third baseman Rob Mackowiak's fielding error, took third on Ramirez's single off Brian Boehringer and scored as Lee broke his bat on a single that skipped past shortstop Jack Wilson.
Astros 7, Cardinals 1
HOUSTON - Mike Lamb, Jeff Bagwell and Lance Berkman hit two-run homers, leading the Astros to a win.
Albert Pujols hit his major league-leading 15th homer for St. Louis, a ninth-inning drive that gave him six homers in his last eight games.
Tim Redding (3-3) allowed four hits over 7 1-3 shutout innings for Houston.
Matt Morris (4-5) gave up three runs and four hits in seven innings.
Phillies 4, Braves 1
PHILADELPHIA - Eric Milton pitched seven strong innings in his longest outing of the season and Jim Thome hit his 12th home run for the Phillies.
Milton (6-1) gave up one run on three hits, striking out a season-high eight batters and walking three. His only difficulty came in the fourth when he gave up an RBI triple to Andruw Jones that tied the game 1-1.
The Phillies took a 2-1 lead in the sixth when Chase Utley got hit by a pitch by Atlanta starter Travis Smith (0-1) with the bases loaded.
Marlins 8, Mets 6
MIAMI - Miguel Cabrera homered and drove in four runs, and Mike Lowell hit a tiebreaking double off Mike Stanton (0-2) in the seventh inning that lifted Florida over the New York Mets.
The Marlins finished a three-game sweep and won for the ninth time in 11 games, but lost right-hander Josh Beckett, who left after 2 2-3 innings with a blister on the middle finger of his pitching hand. He will be placed on the 15-day disabled list Monday. A similar injury sent last year's World Series MVP to the DL three times in the 2002 season.
Jason Phillips homered twice for the Mets, the first multihomer game of his career. The Mets twice rallied from three-run deficits, yet still fell to 1-9 in their last 10 games against Florida.
Dodgers 3, Diamondbacks 0
LOS ANGELES - Kazuhisa Ishii pitched six scoreless innings and Adrian Beltre hit a two-run double, helping Los Angeles shut out Arizona for the second straight game.
Ishii (6-3) gave up three hits and walked four - the fourth time in five starts that he allowed more walks than hits.
Eric Gagne worked a hitless ninth to extend his major league-record saves streak to 75 with his 12th this season.
Casey Fossum (0-3) allowed two runs and nine hits in five innings and struck out six in his fourth start with the Diamondbacks. It was Arizona's 13th loss in 16 games, and the fifth time the Diamondbacks have been shut out this season.
