Reds e-mail Q&A

Enquirer Reds beat writer John Fay answers your e-mail questions every week.

Question, from Mike in College Hill: This is more of a comment than a question, but I think it is appropriate given Larkin's success this year: I just wanted to ask the people of Cincinnati to stuff the All-Star Ballots for our own players, most specifically Barry Larkin, who is having a great season at shortstop. He is second among National League shortstops in hitting, first in fielding, and hasn't had this good a season (due to injuries) in years. Please support this Cincinnati treasure for one more trip to the All-Star game.

A: Good point. The amazing thing about Larkin is he seems to be getting better as the year goes on. He's moving better in the field. His arm looks stronger. He certainly deserves All-Star consideration. If he's not voted in, it will be interesting because Jack McKeon is the National League manager. He and Larkin, of course, have some history.

Q, from John in Mount Carmel: Now that the Reds are playing very well, something that would really put the players over the top is to pick up Dave Miley's option, even extend his contract beyond that, as well as the contracts of the entire coaching staff. The Reds need baseball stability in the worst way (we moved here in 1989, and they didn't have it then, nor have they had it for the last 15 years), and now that they finally have competent skippers from top to bottom, they're in a position to ensure that stability. What are they waiting for -- Pete Rose?

A: Miley's option should have been picked up already. Right now, he's manager of the year in NL and voting's not even close. You're right about the players. There's probably not a player on the club who would be against a Miley extension. If Dan O'Brien is reluctant to do it, John Allen or Carl Lindner should step in and get it done. P.S.: If they're waiting for Pete Rose, it's going to be a long wait. That issue seems to have gone from the back burner to off the stove.

Q, from Brad: There appear to be a lot of teams out of contention at this point. For rumors' sake, who are some pitchers on those teams that the Reds might pursue? I hope management will go after a starting pitcher to reward the fans with a strong season/post season!

A: The player you hear about most is Seattle's Freddy Garcia. While the talk is always about the Reds getting a starter, the club could use relief help right now. You'd think a middle reliever could be had fairly easily.

Q, from Brian in Franklin: According to Bob Nightengale of www.USAToday.com's baseball weekly, the Reds say Sean Casey could be available in the winter. Is there any truth to that rumor, and if so, what would Casey be able to get on the trade market? If true, doesn't the management realize that they risk losing any goodwill built up from this season so far?

A: I don't see that happening with the Reds in contention. It's odd -- last year my inbox was filled with missives urging the Reds to trade Casey. Funny I don't get those anymore. A .387 average will do that.
