Mondesi says he's reached deal with Angels

Baseball notebook

The Associated Press

SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic - Outfielder Raul Mondesi has reached a deal to play for the Anaheim Angels just three weeks after walking away from the game, he told The Associated Press on Friday.

The former All-Star and Gold Glover said he got a $1.75 million contract for the rest of the season. He said he will make his debut in center field for the banged-up AL West leaders Sunday at Chicago.

"I'm very pleased with the agreement I reached with the Angels," Mondesi said.

Greg Genske, one of Mondesi's agents, said he and the Angels were working out the final details of the contract.

DEVIL RAYS: Fred McGriff is ready to resume his quest to reach 500 home runs.

Hoping to add some offensive pop and depth, Tampa Bay called up McGriff from Triple-A Durham on Friday.

The 40-year-old slugger has 491 career homers and is trying to become the 20th player in major-league history to make it to the milestone.

"It's more of a personal goal. It's not 755, breaking Hank Aaron's record," McGriff said before Friday night's game against the Yankees.

BRAVES: Outfielder Chipper Jones and first baseman Adam LaRoche left Friday's game against the Philadelphia Phillies after being injured during separate plays.

Jones was hit above the left knee by a fastball from Randy Wolf in the first inning and injured his quadriceps. He is listed as day to day.

LaRoche was injured in a collision with Phillies catcher Mike Lieberthal while trying to score on Rafael Furcal's fielder's choice. LaRoche later was taken to the hospital for X-rays. Results were not immediately known.

SHORT HOPS: Joe Dawley was to be called up from Triple-A Buffalo and Cleveland Indians manager Eric Wedge said he would start tonight against Oakland.

Right-hander Chad Durbin will be designated for assignment.

• San Diego Padres slugger Ryan Klesko was placed on the 15-day disabled list Friday with a strained muscle in his rib cage.

Klesko has struggled at the plate all season, hitting just one homer with 22 RBI while batting .261.
