KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Carlos Pena and the hard-hitting Detroit Tigers left their mark on the Kansas City Royals - especially Justin Huisman.
Pena's line drive struck the Royals reliever on the forehead, leaving a clear imprint of the baseball's seams.
Huisman was OK after Pena's single, one of a team record-tying 27 hits by the Tigers in a 17-7 romp Thursday.
Pena went 6-for-6 with two home runs and five RBI and tied the club record for hits in a nine-inning game with Ty Cobb and two others. Pena tied the AL record for hits in a nine-inning game; Alfonso Soriano and Frank Catalanotto also did it this season.
Detroit clubbed eight doubles in easily setting the major-league high for hits this season.
The 27 hits - eight doubles, 17 singles and Pena's two home runs - tied the Tigers' team record set Sept. 29, 1928, against the New York Yankees.
Indians 9, Mariners 5
CLEVELAND - Jake Westbrook was spotted a big lead, and Cleveland's struggling bullpen didn't give it all back as the Indians, ending their season-high losing streak at seven.
Westbrook (4-2) managed to make it through five innings, allowing four runs and seven hits. He then turned it over to Cleveland's relievers, already responsible for 14 losses and 11 blown saves, who allowed one hit over the final four innings.
Devil Rays 5, Twins 4
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - Rocco Baldelli hit a go-ahead, three-run homer, and reliever John Halama threw 3 1/3 scoreless innings to lead Tampa Bay.
White Sox 9, Rangers 0
CHICAGO - Mark Buehrle scattered nine hits over seven innings, and Juan Uribe homered twice as Chicago blanked Texas for the second straight game.
Athletics 15 Red Sox 2
BOSTON - Eric Chavez and Scott Hatteberg homered to lead Oakland's best offensive game of the season.
Blue Jays 3, Angels 2
TORONTO - Roy Halladay took a three-hit shutout into the ninth, and Toronto completed a three-game sweep. He (5-4) outpitched Jarrod Washburn, who failed in his attempt to become the majors' first eight-game winner.
Yankees 18, Orioles 5
BALTIMORE - Alex Rodriguez homered, and Hideki Matsui had two hits during an eight-run fifth inning, and New York completed a three-game sweep.
The Yankees finished with a season-high 18 runs and season-high 21 hits. They had 51 hits and 41 runs in the series.
