NEW YORK - First baseman Mike Piazza's throwing error set up Jim Thome's tiebreaking double and the Philadelphia Phillies scored six runs in the seventh inning to beat the New York Mets 7-4 Wednesday night.
Mike Lieberthal got the Phillies going with an RBI double, sparking their rally from a 3-0 deficit. Philadelphia snapped New York's four-game winning streak and remained in a virtual tie with Florida atop the NL East.
Matt Ginter pitched six shutout innings for the Mets, extending their scoreless streak to 28, their longest since going 31 innings without allowing a run in September 1990.
But an overworked bullpen failed the Mets, who lost for only the fourth time in 13 games.
David Bell opened the seventh with a one-hop shot off shortstop Kaz Matsui's glove that was ruled an error. Bell scored on Lieberthal's double to left off Ricky Bottalico, ending New York's scoreless string, and Doug Glanville looped an RBI single off John Franco (0-3).
Giants 4, Diamondbacks 3
SAN FRANCISCO - Barry Bonds hit his second homer in two days, and Pedro Feliz hit a go-ahead, two-run double in the eighth for San Francisco. Bonds hit a 2-2 pitch from Casey Daigle to dead center for his 12th home run of the year and the 670th of his career.
Robby Hammock had two hits and drove in a run for Arizona, which fell to 12 games under .500 - its worst record since the club's inaugural season in 1998, when it finished 65-97.
Astros 7, Cubs 3
HOUSTON - Jeff Bagwell, Jeff Kent and Lance Berkman each homered off Greg Maddux, and Houston overcame the early loss of Andy Pettitte to complete a two-game sweep. Chicago was swept for the first time this season.
Pettitte left in the fourth inning with discomfort in his left forearm, and the team said he was day-to-day.
Rockies 13, Padres 6
DENVER - Vinny Castilla homered twice and drove in four runs, helping the Colorado Rockies end a six-game losing streak.
Castilla hit homers in first and eighth innings, increasing his season total to 14, tied with Arizona's Steve Finley for the major league lead. Matt Holliday had a two-run homer in the fifth.
Braves 6, Expos 1
MONTREAL - Russ Ortiz threw a five-hitter for his first complete game of the season and eighth of his career, leading Atlanta over Montreal.
Ortiz (5-4) allowed one run in winning his second straight start. He retired his last 17 batters, and 22 of 23, to improve to 5-2 in his last eight outings.
Brewers 2, Dodgers 1, 12 innings
MILWAUKEE - Third baseman Adrian Beltre's throwing error on Keith Ginter's sacrifice bunt in the 12th inning allowed Geoff Jenkins to score the winning run for Milwaukee.
Ginter, who fouled out to Beltre with Jenkins on third in the 10th, laid down a perfect bunt with runners at first and second and nobody out. Beltre fielded it and overthrew first base, allowing Jenkins, who led off with an infield single, to score.
